Gallery of poster and promotional art from Stanley Kubrick films

Art from films by Kubrick

Keeping on with my internet community fetish, we come to the extremely packed Kubrick Multimedia Film Guide, a large site serving as a major source of information for the brilliant works of director and producer Stanley Kubrick. Contained within this site is a large (and growing) gallery of posters and promotional art from past Kubrick films dating back to the 1950s on through to Eyes Wide Shut. Poster and promotional pieces from films such as 2001, Lolita, Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Paths of Glory are on display, with more being added as the collection grows, which hopefully it does. The posters from 2001 were just pure brilliance, this coming from a NASA and design nerd.

Video bonus and links after the jump..

Collection of scripts for every episode of Seinfeld ever aired

Seinfeld and Superman!

SERENITY NOW!!! We love the Seinfeld crew here and are watching and re-watching episodes like there’s no tomorrow. While we consider ourselves hardcore fans, we’d never consider ourselves hardcore enough to recreate Seinfeld episodes in our living room. Which is exactly what we can now do thanks to the mega Seinfeld community site, Seinfeld Chronicles. Other than having info and trivia on just about everything ever mentioned through Seinfeld’s 9 seasons, they also have an archive with every script for every episode ever filmed, including the pilot-episode! As I mentioned before, I’m always amazed at the communal power of the internet, espcially when that power is benefiting a community I consider myself a part of.

Frank: You’re late again, Costanza, so listen up. Starting tonight, we’re having a little sales contest. The loser gets fired, the winner gets a Waterpik.

Estelle: (From another room) You’re not giving away our Waterpik!

Frank: Serenity now!

George: You know what? It doesn’t matter, because I quit!

Frank: I guess your mother was right. You never could compete with Lloyd Braun! (Lloyd rings his sale bell and smiles)

George: You wanna sell computers? I will show *you* how to sell computers! Hello, Mr. Farneman. You wanna buy a computer? No? Why not? All right, I see! Good answer! Thank you! (Lloyd rings his sale bell)

Serenity now!

MSN secures online syndication rights to Arrested Development

Arrested Development

Marketing Vox is reporting that MSN has secured the online syndication rights to Fox’s canceled (boy what a mistake) cult television show Arrested Development. This gives MSN the rights to add all 53 episodes of Arrested to MSN’s store featuring free, ad-supported video-episodes. This marks the first time that a major studio has sold a show’s syndication rights to a web portal, at least according to AdAge. Way to go MSN! Arrested was also picked up by HDNet for HDTV syndication and by G4 for normal broadcast syndication.

Korean social network, Cyworld launches in the US

Cyworld - South Korean social network system

South Korean mega-social network Cyworld has launched in the US, bringing another avatar-based social system to the already crowded US market. Cyworld is a giant in South Korea, with reportedly 90% of the population under the age of 20 registered to the service, which is a market share I doubt they’ll ever see here in the US. Cyworld ties in a web-game with social networking, allowing the user to create their own personalized cartoon avatar and Minihome to personalize and invite friends to visit. There is even an in-world currency (not currently present in the US version) where users can purchase more Cyworld Currency (Acorns?) in exchange for real-world currency (not sure if that works vice-versa). I unfortunately don’t see this service taking off stateside, as their reliance on the younger market just doesn’t translate over to the US and with services like MySpace and Facebook currently struggling to define themselves in the youth market, it makes it that much rougher for Cyworld.

Snacksby - Like MacGyver, but for food

Snacksby

Snacksby is an interesting addition to the new breed of web applications. Basically a recipe site, with a twist, Snacksby asks that you enter in what you have in your pantry or cupboard and it returns to you a list of recipes containing those ingredients. For instance, if I had sharp cheddar (soy) cheese, multigrain bread, onions, pepper, dijon mustard, and butter (margarine), Snacksby informs me that I have all of the ingredients to cook a quick and easy “Grilled Cheese sandwich, Alton Brown style-ish” as well as a partial list of ingredients for over 9 more pages of recipes. Kudos Snacksby, you just made a lazy household’s cooking even easier!

OpenDNS - Make your internet work better

OpenDNS

DNS is an essential system for the contemporary internet, basically translating domain names (ie. bunchofnerds.com) to IP addresses, making for easily recognizable names assigned to IP addresses. That’s about as deep as I’ll get into the networking 101, but you get the gist. The internet has gotten a shot in the arm last week, with the launching of OpenDNS, a new public DNS service which is faster, safer, and smarter than your ISPs DNS and best of all, it’s completely free to use.

OpenDNS gives the user a bit of extra security by automatically blocking sites which are determined to be Phishing site (you know those emails you get from PayPal or eBay asking you to login to www.bizserchsrvice.info/EbAY because your account has been blocked?), speeds up many of your connections by taking out several hops from your DNS lookups while surfing the internet, and even intelligently tries to route you towards your desired destination when you mis-spell the TLD (i always type in .cm or something similar). It’s extremely easy to switch to OpenDNS’ services, with the end user merely having to change 2 settings via their computer and/or router, a step that OpenDNS has documented to a tee to make it even easier. I’ve been using OpenDNS for several days and I’m now more than happy to encourage others to also give it a try, as I’ve seen noticable increases in speed and it’s pretty cool to see a Phishing site automatically being blocked before I reach it.

Free PC to phone calling over the internet, finally! Kind of…

VOIP craziness

It seems the VOIP wars are beginning to get exciting again, with Skype, Gizmo and JAJAH all announcing varying offers for free computer to phone (landline and mobile) calling through their services. We’ll start with Skype recently announcing they will be offering free calls to landlines and mobile phones within the US and Canada from Skype. Then we had JAJAH offering free calls between registered JAJAH users, by simply calling the registered number of another JAJAH user. Now, we get Gizmo rolling out with free calls to mobile and/or landlines in over 60 countries. Is this truly the beginning of a price war or will Skype roll over everyone with their large hardware support?

Super Nerds failed pilot up on YouTube

Patton Oswalt's failed pilot episode on YouTube

The pilot for Patton Oswalt (King of Queens), Brian Posehn, and Sarah Silverman’s failed television project, “Super Nerds” has been up on YouTube for awhile now for all to watch and (probably not) enjoy. I still feel a bit odd seeing YouTube used as a marketing ground of television and movie executives, but, if that helps YouTube stay afloat then more power to them (they have to make money somehow). While Oswalt and Posehn do a pretty spot-on portrayal of a couple of comic-book store owning nerds, they also appear a bit uncomfortable or at least a bit nervous, which leads to more than a few awkward and uncomfortable silences when there should be laughter. I wish them luck, but I can certainly understand why this was a pass.

Watch the video and maybe laugh a few times after the jump…
