Original Star Trek to be remastered for HDTV and DVD release

The original Star Trek

Rumours are swirling among the Star Trek boards that the original Star Trek series will be remastered for a high definition DVD and eventual HD-DVD release, featuring enhanced CG effects worthy of a high definition premium release. Rumors had been going around since this year’s Comic Con in San Diego that a Star Trek remastered edition was in the works, but confirmations from sources are starting to appear from in and around CBS Video, who now owns the rights to Star Trek on DVD. It seems original series special effects will be re-done, featuring all new CG techniques, including all of the spaceship shots, similar to the recent Mirror Universe episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. Let’s just hope the end product looks as good as it did in Enterprise.

This year’s Buffy Award goes to Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica wins this year's Buffy Award

Every year, Salon.com, an online magazine I hope everyone out there reads (ahem), presents it’s Buffy Award to the most under-appreciated television show currently on the air. The award, named after the under-appreciated Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is now in it’s third year of existence, having previously gone to HBO’s “The Wire” and to Veronica Mars. This year, the award is again spot-on, being given to Battlestar Galactica, probably one of the most under-rated television shows on the air at the moment and in the past several years. We’re huge huge BSG fans here and we don’t even use that “re-imagined” junk, BSG deserves all the praise it gets and then some, so, congrats BSG for being the most under-appreciated show of year, let’s hope season 3 is the year that brings you close to mainstream television market acceptance and glory.

College students stumble on to set of Lost, make themselves at home

Lost fans stumble-upon un-guarded set

What do you do if you’re a huge fan of television’s Lost and happen to stumble-upon an un-guarded film set while on holiday in Hawaii? You make yourself at home naturally! A few college students did just that while enjoying some sun in the vicinity where Lost shoots in Hawaii. While exploring some pristine beaches, they stumbled upon a completely empty Lost set, which appears to give some spoiling insight into some upcoming episodes. The students found tents, a cage (?), racks of Dharma branded food, cans and toilet paper (which I hope they ‘borrowed’), among many other things. Thankfully (?), they documented their trespassing and are sharing the complete photo set on Flickr for us land-locked Lost fans to enjoy.

Welcome new readers. Bunch of Nerds is a collection of nerdy topics from around the internet, covering our favorite television shows (Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Arrested Development and Deadwood in case you were wondering), gadgets, web development, and so much more. SCI FI confirms cancellation of Stargate SG-1, movie on the way?

Stargate SG-1 cancelled

The time has come to say goodbye to Stargate SG-1 on television, as SCI FI has confirmed the will no longer renew episodes of the show after season 10. 10 years is quite a good run and to be honest, I haven’t been so into the later seasons of Stargate, preferring to put all my energy into Battlestar Galactica (even though I loved farscape with Ben Browder and Claudia Black). Sci Fi is continuing their support of Stargate spin-off, Stargate Atlantis, renewing it for a 4th season and I’m sure we’ll see Stargate SG-1 continue through syndication for many many years to come. There’s no word on how this will effect the troubled Stargate video game franchise which has seen some ups and downs, with the Stargate FPS being mis-handled horribly by the developer, then dropped by the publisher, before being killed by MGM, and the Stargate MMORPG still in development.

SCI FI’s confirmation and statement after the jump..

Star Trek cast mashed-up to perform Knights of the Round Table from Monthy Python

Monty Trek

The cast of the original Star Trek get mashed up to perform Monty Python’s “Knights of the Round Table” from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail in this somewhat well-done YouTube video mashup. I honestly don’t remember a few of the Star Trek scenes the creator used in this mashup, which not only means I’ll have to turn in not only my Star Trek fan club membership card, but also that I might be disqualified from writing for this site in the future :(

Watch the video and sing-along after the jump..

Star Trek bloopers and outtakes video

Star Trek

No television series is complete without a blooper reel, but one show I, for some reason, never imagined having bloopers is Star Trek. Their cast always seem so on the ball and serious I just never actually imagined any of the actors throughout the years laughing or making a mistake during filming. My mistake. While Star Trek was still a viable franchise (and on air), UPN broadcast a short clip of bloopers from Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, featuring many of our (you know, us Star Trek fans) favorite characters experiencing somewhat uncharacteristic outbursts and mistakes while shooting various scenes throughout the years. Oh Q, poor Q…

Watch the video and maybe snicker a little after the jump..

Ron Moore posts new Battlestar Galactica Q&A

Battlestar Galactica

Ron Moore, the mighty leader of Battlestar Galactica (re-imagined) has updated his blog at SciFi to give us fans a sneak peak at some of the current progress of BSG season 3 and also to go through another round of his much-appreciated question and answer sessions. Ron regularly takes questions from fans, answering them through his blog and giving fans a unique insight into the BSG world, sometimes dropping a few spoilers along the way. This time around we cover topics such as homosexuality in the BSG-world (or seemingly lack thereof), the health and prophecy of President Roslin, and many others. Moore also briefly discusses the upcoming episode penned by Jane Espenson of Buffy fame as well as discussing his desire to see her join the writing team (depending on how things go with season 4).
