How-To video site explosion

Teamwork!

Did I miss something? I knew the how-to was one of the most overused stories to get a blogger more linkbacks and rankings, but where did all these how-to video sites popup from? I’m not complaining really cause I love these sites and love learning new and often times useless tricks and DIY. Instructables and Video Jug are both extremely useful video sharing sites with a focus on how-tos and distribution of knowledge, one of the many great uses of this here internet thingy we’re filling up pipes with. Both are social internet services, allowing users to sign up, download, rate and create video how-tos and share them among their similarly DIY-addicted friends. Quick hint fellas, over at Video Jub there’s a how-to on the front page for giving yourself a testicular exam!

Kung Fu versus Yoga

Kung Fu vs. Yoga

I couldn’t write a more descriptive title if I tried. In the mid to late 1970s Hong Kong action movies were hitting their prime and nothing proves that more than the aptly titled, “Kung Fu versus Yoga”. Two fighters are battling over who will win the heart of a beautiful maiden when they have to take on a yoga-fighter extraordinaire whose ability to contort his body is at first very difficult for the traditional Kung Fu style to overcome. All of the requirements for 70′s low-brow martial arts cinema are present, from the highly-choreographed fighting to the lighthearted banter between enemies, I hope this is a film that every serious Hong Kong action fan has in their collection (both the original and the Dolemite collection re-release!).

Video how-tos for just about everything on Earth

ViewDo

We recently received a tip (thanks!) about ViewDo which is a site I can’t get enough of. ViewDo is a giant social video community, featuring hundreds upon hundreds of video tutorials on just about anything you could imagine, and if they don’t have it, you can request that another user create a video sharing their knowledge with you. Even cooler, all videos are downloadable in iPod and Playstation Portable formats. Just today I’ve learned how to make origami stars, how to break-dance, how to make an ethernet cable, tie a double windsor and throw a split-finger fastball. I’ve finally found a reason to actually use my PSP!

Music video: “Gunnera” by isan

isan on Morr Music

isan have been releasing music together since 1996, recording various albums, singles and remixes in the past for many labels and artists (Depeche Mode, Figurine and Phasmid to name a few). The beauty behind isan is that they work the majority of their time apart, communicating primarily through email and post, uniting for the occasional live show or festival. isan now count Berlin super-label Morr Music as their spiritual home and have recently released their new album, “Plans Drawn in Pencil” on CD and 12″ vinyl.

Video of lightning striking a moving auto with camera inside

Lightning

Yikes, a driver going down a highway was in for a bit of a shock (har har, get it?) one stormy afternoon, when suddenly, poof, their car became one hulking mass of lightning rod. Unfortunately, the video ends shortly after the blast, but, it doesn’t appear to have caused major damage, at least to the car, I would imagine a few years were taken off the driver’s life.

Music video: “Mushroom” by Can with special tribute by Brian Eno

Can and Brian Eno

Can were one of the most influential bands to come out of the late-60s / 70s “krautrock” scene, with their minimal arrangements emphasizing drums and bass, intertwined guitar solos and rambling, often incoherent vocals (sung in “the language of the cave-men”). Founded in Germany in 1968, the experimental rock band went through several singers and described themselves as an anarchist community, constructing their music mostly through improvisation and editing, with most early works being recorded at a castle which they rented outside of Cologne, Germany named Schloss Nörvenich.

Debut trailer of Rockstar Games’ Bully

Rockstar Games' Bully

Taking time off from closing development studios, (reportadly) bleeding talent from their various studios and throwing wild hipster parties in New York lofts, Rockstar Games have released the debut trailer for their upcoming school days meets GTA meets negative press magnet, Bully. The trailer plays more like an animated after-school special, but the quality of the voice acting and art are refreshing as always. Even though half the gaming world hasn’t seen a lick of gameplay from the title, the ‘normals’ are already all up in arms, naturally being lead by our lord and saviour Jack Thompson, with calls for banning the game from stores in order to keep kids from playing a game which is probably tamer than their everyday school lives to begin with (dear parents, most kids in school today are horrible people, go browse YouTube and MySpace for a little while for more information). So, uhmm, yeah whatever, when’s the next GTA coming out again?

Star Trek cast mashed-up to perform Knights of the Round Table from Monthy Python

Monty Trek

The cast of the original Star Trek get mashed up to perform Monty Python’s “Knights of the Round Table” from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail in this somewhat well-done YouTube video mashup. I honestly don’t remember a few of the Star Trek scenes the creator used in this mashup, which not only means I’ll have to turn in not only my Star Trek fan club membership card, but also that I might be disqualified from writing for this site in the future :(

Watch the video and sing-along after the jump..

A 1978 Ferrari 275 GTB speeding through the streets of Paris

Ferrari in Paris

On a dark August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch reportedly mounted a still-camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a professional Formula 1 driver race the car at high-speed through the streets of Paris, France. No streets were closed as Lelouch had not obtained a permit for the shoot, as the footage reveals, the driver narrowly missed pedestrians, blasts through red lights and is documented driving the opposite way up one-way streets. Shortly after showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was immediately arrested, but refused to reveal the name of the driver. There are some disagreements with Lelouch’s story however, there are rumors that Lelouch himself was the driver, piloting his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 (a somewhat-rare performance-enhanced Mercedes sedan from 1978) in the film, with engine-audio from a Ferrari dubbed over. The driver was also reported to have reached 140 MPH during the film, which was later disputed by several independent groups who found that the driver never reaches more than 140 KM/H (85 MPH), but Lelouch’s claims could have easily been a translation error, in my opinion.

Regardless, watch the original film to digital transfer from 1978 after the jump..
