Video from Northern Exposure’s parody of Twin Peaks

Northern Exposure

I’ve recently started watching Northern Exposure again from the very beginning, which is reminding of how much I loved this show. Airing from 1990 – 1995, Northern Exposure was a quirky, dramatic, comedic jewel, taking place in a small Alaskan town, which to this very day I want to live in. The show’s quirkiness came from it’s wide variety of influences, most notably, the show’s creators who were members of the Esalen Institute in California, which presents an eclectic and “spritual” worldview, exemplified in the writings of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell. The show’s rich appreciation for Native American culture and mythology also gave the writer’s a rich background of material to use in future episodes and was also one of the few shows to present a wonderfully positive view of Native American culture (kudos!). Because of the show’s quirkiness however, it was often compared to Twin Peaks, something that would flatter the hell out of me, might have gotten a bit annoying after several years. This is where one of my fondest memories of Northern Exposure comes from, episode 5 of season 1, where Northern Exposure does a spot on parody of Twin Peaks, even goning so far as to film sequences at Snoqualmie Falls in northern Washington, the infamous waterfall seen throughout Twin Peaks.

The original Family Guy pilot submitted to Fox

Family Guy

Yeah yeah, we’re all about videos lately, we know we know. But seriously, who couldn’t resist watching the Family Guy pilot for free? Not I, that much you already know. Before Seth Macfarlane had his hit series Family Guy on air, he started out just like the rest of us would, with a dream and a pilot reel. This is the original 7 minute pilot, submitted to Fox, which for the life of me I have no idea how on Earth Family Guy made it on the air. Don’t get me wrong, the show is brilliant, but never could I imagine Fox’s suits watching this and enthusiastically pumping their fists in the air. Then again, this is Fox we’re talking about, so, you never know.

Watch a few Mythbusters episodes on Google Video

Mythbusters

A very determined fan of Mythbusters has created a small blog which will begin providing links to Mythbusters episodes which are free to watch via Google Video. Though I would venture to say the legality is in question, any self-respecting nerd is a Mythbusters fan and wouldn’t care where their fix comes from, so have at it, while it lasts. Ahhh Mythbusters, the “Jackass” for nerds.

Bet on which new television series will be canned, win cool stuff

Death Watch 2006

Brilliant But Cancelled is running a very fun little contest, “Death Watch 2006″, where viewers are able to ‘bet’ on which new television series will be the first to get axed, with nifty odds count, showing that Fox’s “Happy Hour” (3:1) and ABC’s “Men in Trees” (4:1) are looking almost like sure bets. I would have thought “Vanished” (34:1) wouldn’t be getting along too well, but, who am I to mess with the pros. Every correct bet enters you to win an iPod and registers you for the grand prize drawing of a 37″ HDTV! Good clean fun for every television fan, young and old!

Bush to hold talks with Kazakhstani president over Borat / Ali G

Borat

Whosa whasa happenin’ now? I missed this yesterday, but, in recent statements from Kazakhstani officials, one of the (no doubt highly important and numerous) topics that the visiting Kazakhstani president will cover on his official state visit with George Bush will be that of Borat / Ali G’s frowned-upon portrayal of his country. Even though more people in the west are aware of Kazahkstan now than ever before, mostly thanks to Ali G, the Kazakhstani (ok I’m not typing this again) president feels that his country’s image is being tarnished which they are planning to defend via legal action against Borat AKA Ali G AKA Sacha Baron Cohen.

Original Twin Peaks promo from ABC

Twin Peaks

Back when Twin Peaks was the hottest thing on television and ABC actually cared about marketing it, they showed this brief promo before Twin Peaks aired, hyping up the viewers before their minds were about to blown. Someone has thankfully found this promo and archived it, though no new bloopers or info about the show are on it, it’s still an interesting piece of retro television history, in VHS format.

Zach Braff maybe not leaving Scrubs?

Zach Braff

We were beginning to panic a litttle when we read all the rumours that Braff would be leaving Scrubs after this year to focus on his movie career, but, it seems we jumped the gun a little. In a recent interview for TVguide, the man himself cleared up the mis-quote, reassuring us that he’s not leaving Scrubs but planting the little seed that, hey, it’s a possibility after all. To quote Braff:

That was [taken] a little bit out of context. What I said was that this is the first year where it’ll be up to me. I’m not necessarily leaving. It’s all up in the air; nothing’s decided.

Braff also covered his love of Arrested Development and some interesting details about trying to get every Arrested Development character to appear on Scrubs at least once (way to go!).

Kiefer Sutherland taking out a Christmas tree

Kiefer with an upside-down 24 sign

Though this video has made the rounds and has been linked to by just about everyone on MySpace, I just can’t get enough of watching Kiefer Sutherland take down a Christmas tree. While on tour with one of the bands on his label over the holidays, it appears the group was celebrating in a hotel lobby when it seems Kiefer snapped, tackling a Christmas tree and no doubt pissing off a few hotel employees all at once.
