Meta-poll tracking for the upcoming US elections

  October 23rd, 2006 by Nerds

Electoral Vote.com

With the November mid-term elections rapidly approaching in the U.S., it’s time once again to get all worked up over polling numbers and argue over which group of politicians will be in charge of helping themselves rather than the residents of the United States. My favorite site for keeping up to date with the state by state polling is Electoral Vote, the horribly yellow, but oddly appealing meta-poll site, which collects day to day polling results from the top polling institutes, whether they be Democratic or Republican, and averages them together, giving us an untainted look at the polling numbers being tossed around the country. If you can actually consider polling to be untainted.

U.S. bans Vegemite, sorry Aussie ex-pats

  October 23rd, 2006 by Nerds

Have a Vegemite sandwich!

Hoax from the land down under? You decide. Australia’s Courier Mail are reporting that the U.S. has recently begun enforcing a ban on the import of Vegemite, the salty food paste made from yeast extract that Australians seem to love spread on their breakfast toast. With reports of Vegemite checks at border crossings, import shops and airports, Australians reportedly are beginning to feel the crunch. Vegemite, a brand now owned by food conglomerate Kraft Foods, is said to contain Folate, an ingredient which is only allowed in U.S. breads and cereals.

Video documentary on William S. Burroughs II from 1984

  October 22nd, 2006 by Nerds

William Burroughs at home

William S. Burroughs was a troubled, troubled man, as everyone already knows. This documentary, filmed in 1984, follows Burroughs through his daily life, taking a visit back to his hometown as well as meeting Burroughs’ brother Mortimer, and speaking with many of his friends, family and colleagues, discussing their takes on Burroughs’ life and works. Some great interviews and scenes are contained within, from a short interview with William S. Burroughs III (JR), Burroughs’ troubled and estranged son, some great shots of Ginsberg talking with Burroughs about Jack Kerouc (calling him a great writer who wrote some book called “on the route” and became well known), as well as an interesting tour of Burroughs’ New York City “Bunker”, a window-less apartment retreat that actually looked like a nuclear bunker. A choice quote from Burroughs himself: “My whole life has been resistance to the ugly spirit”.

Grab some popcorn, get comfortable and watch the documentary after the jump..

Terry Jones, star of Monty Python has cancer

  October 22nd, 2006 by Nerds

Monty Python

It’s been reported over the weekend that Monty Python stay Terry Jones has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital in London. The talk is that they’ve caught it soon enough and hopes are high that treatment will be successful, but, still, cancer is nothing to play around with, so let’s all hope for the best. Monty Python’s Spamalot has just opened on London’s West End, where Jones was in attendance, enjoying himself and posing for pictures along with Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam.

77 Million Paintings by Brian Eno looks amazing

  October 20th, 2006 by Nerds

Brian Eno - 77 Million Paintings

Brian Eno has long been a pioneer in audio and visual arts. The father of ambient music, Eno’s career spans decades and his technical and artistic achievements are rivaled by very few. Eno’s recent project, “77 Million Paintings” is an experiment in digital art, featuring 3GB or actually, 77 million paintings, on one DVD. The project is full of brilliant pieces (many millions of them) of art and a generative soundtrack produced by the man himself. The generative soundtrack, which goes along well with the “ambient-Eno” many know and love, are random sounds collected and randomly played back throughout the slideshow, making the soundtrack completely unique with every viewing. “77 Million Paintings” is available now and limited to 10,000 copies, for both PC and MAC.

2001 meets Office Space in YouTube mashup

  October 19th, 2006 by Nerds

Milton!

2001 meets Office Space in this odd, but somewhat enjoyable video mashup courtesy of the GooTube. A shame they didn’t use some of Milton’s dialogue, because, well, he’s Milton and there’s no one better, but, still, it’s good enough. After watching, proceed straight to the “Which Office Space character am I?” quiz over at Quizilla.

Watch the mashup after the jump..

  October 18th, 2006 by Nerds

SkyBark

Now we’re talking. SkyBark, a new upscale club for sophisticated canines and their human companions, is expanding from their Los Angeles location (where else?) with a new location opening in Boston. Offering stylish dog-friendly furniture, music, food and even puppy cocktails, SkyBark will most certainly become one of the greatest inventions known to man and dog alike, as long as they can keep riff-raff like Paris Hilton out.
