U.S. bans Vegemite, sorry Aussie ex-pats

Have a Vegemite sandwich!

Hoax from the land down under? You decide. Australia’s Courier Mail are reporting that the U.S. has recently begun enforcing a ban on the import of Vegemite, the salty food paste made from yeast extract that Australians seem to love spread on their breakfast toast. With reports of Vegemite checks at border crossings, import shops and airports, Australians reportedly are beginning to feel the crunch. Vegemite, a brand now owned by food conglomerate Kraft Foods, is said to contain Folate, an ingredient which is only allowed in U.S. breads and cereals.

dsfklöa, kldsfu., bbbr, btbbbbbtrrttt! where to begin! surely vegemite is the australian rip-off of marmite (thanks melanie for the cue). wikipedia, the lazy person’s “street” cred, says marmite was invented in 1902, whereas vegemite was invented in 1923. yet another proof that australia is nothing but a robber’s colony! :D

..but in light of these news i urge all -mites to unite.

i do prefer marmite, however. you need to get used to the flavor for a bit, but once you got accustomed to the sticky and salty flavor, you just have to love it. its also a great source for vitamin b12, so in fact recommended for vegans like us.

was there any reason given for why they’re banning vegemite? is it hazardous? i suspect its similar to irn bru: the scotting soft drink is also banned in the US because of over-tight food-colouring laws or something liek that, and i think they’re making special US irn bru now.

nice fun fact about marmite: its a black and shiny substance, but when you but some of it on a spoon and repeatedly beat it (with the spoon) it turns lighter and eventually white.

It’s an outrage that vegemite is banned. Please consider signing my petition at http://www.savevegemite.com and help get our favourite Aussie icon unbanned.
WE ARE NOT HAPPY LITTLE VEGEMITES!!!!

(They have banned it because it contains folate which is only allowed in breads and cereals)
