Mars habitable in 1000 years by introducing global warming

Mars

Who needs planet Earth when we’ve got Mars?? That’s what I’m saying. The Mars Society, a group of scientists who share a goal of colonizing Mars, believes that humans can colonize the red planet in little more than 1000 years, in stark competition with other scientist’s who say it would be 20,000-100,000 years. According to the society, Mars could be colonized in 3 steps, the first of which is occurring now, exploration. Though many human landings would need to take place, the following steps would involve sketchy actions, such as giant mirrors directing the sun to the planet in an attempt to warm it, freeing gasses and eventually creating a global warming type effect. One of the options would be to build several chemical plants on the surface, pumping out 1,000 tons of fluoromethane an hour, which would raise the temperature on the red planet by 50°F over 30 years. See the complete PopSci walkthrough for a complete walkthrough of scenarios for terraforming planet Mars.

I’m not sure if mars would ever be like planet earth. Since the outer core is dead. These could pose problems with radiation from the sun. But mars is diffenently more like earth than any other known planet.

I’m not sure what to think about this.

On the one hand, we would be destroying an entire planet to build a livable one for humans. And when does this ‘global warming’ process stop if it can be stopped?

We can do this to Mars but can’t fix or stabilize the planet we already occupy?

We destroy one planet and move on to the next. What does that really make us?

This is sooo dumb lol….even though its more like anyother planet…seriously…earth was ment for humans, mears was ment for the beauty of this universe…

Danny, how can we “destroy” Mars by bringing life to it? It is a barren rock!
Jo, are all planets in the universe just for beauty? Who says? God? Don’t be a fool.

Mike, he’s not talking ABOUT the destruction of Mars. He’s talking about the destruction of the Earth, and then moving to another planet to create life, then repeating the process of making a planet suitable for humans, destroying it, and finding a new one. Do you see what he and I are saying or are YOU too much of a fool to comprehend?

Or…. It doesn’t matter. No government will fund a 1000 year long project to terraform a planet. There is no immediate satisfaction, no payout. And regardless of your belief, when it comes between dieing or perverting another planet, we all will choose life. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar, or idealist.
