Gearlust: iRiver’s CES 2007 product lineup

iRiver

Yeah yeah, so CES 2007 is like, so last week and hey it wasn’t really all *that* great, especially after Apple completely took the wind out of it with the announcement of their iPhone. There were some standouts however, most notably (at least to me) iRiver and their new lineup, which is not only super sexy, but also approaching Apple in industry design quality, though bordering on Sony-influenced lines and glossy black plastic, which starts to worry us a touch. But eh, enough of that, here’s some highlights:

Inventor creates exoskeleton body armor, hopes to sell to military

Trojan

Canadian inventor Troy Hurtubise is famous for his protection suit for hunters, known as the bear-suit. After hearing from Iraq war veterans about adapting the suit for combat use, Hurtubise shifted focus. Hoping to attract the Canadian and US military as clients, Hurtubise has invented a light-weight exoskeleton body suit of armor, which resists bullets, light explosives, knives and clubs. Called the Trojan, the suit could prove to be a welcome edition to the future of military warfare. The inventor was also quick to give credit to Microsoft’s amazing action shooter, Halo, as one of his inspirations in designing the Trojan. Be sure to check the video interview with Hurtubise for more information.

World’s first chainsaw powered motorcycle

Chainsaw Cycle

Dolmar, a manufacturer of hardcore chainsaws, for those who want real power when destroying things, has created the first chainsaw powered motorcycle named the Dolemite. Using 24 PS-7900 chainsaws, which has the best power-to-weight ratio of any chainsaw in the world, the cycle can deliver 125 kW of power with 130 Nm of torque (ie. a hell of a lot). The fully assembled bike weighs a little over 300 kg, with a power-to-weight ration of 1.8 kg/PS.

Watch a little more about the Dolemite after the jump..

Self-cleaning underwear can stay fresh for weeks

Smelly

Scientists working for the Air Force have created t-shirts and underwear that can be worn hygienically for weeks without having to be washed. By attaching nanoparticles to clothing fiber using microwaves, then binding special chemicals that repel water, oil and bacteria, scientists have created a protective coating on the clothing, forcing liquids to simply bead up and run off. Naturally the US military was behind the innovation, which could revolution the sports industry as well as the killing industry. The total cost for research and development came to around $20 million and is intended to protect soldiers in the future from biological weapon attacks, much like the attacks seen during Desert Storm, which actually killed more soldiers than accidents and friendly fire.

Reactable is hopefully the electronic music instument of the future

Reactable

Many have been asking, “where is the future?”, and although most of those are bi-spectacled nerds (who we wholeheartedly support), many others are starting to wonder where we went wrong. I mean, where are the flying cars, the stainless steel towers in the sky, the motorized walkways? Apple is starting to take us into the right direction for technophiles and now musicians have the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona to thank for the Reactable, a multi-user electronic music instrument built into a tabletop interface. Imagine if you will, a life-size Elektroplankton! Yeahhhhh. With it, users are able to create complex and dynamic sonic “topologies” (music compositions) by moving physical objects over the table, controlling virtual generators, filters and modulators in a graspable flow-controlled programming language.

Enough techno-bibble babble, take a look at the Reactable in action after the jump..
