Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s low-bandwidth site

  April 29th, 2007 by Nerds

Aqua Team Hunger Force

Adult Swim is certainly known for their marketing brilliance. Taking the Boston debacle in stride, those wacky folks down in Atlanta hit another home run with their hot little promotional site for the new(ish) Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.

Yeah yeah, movie sites are nothing new, but the little suprise here is the low-bandwidth version of the promo site. By utilizing design aesthetics from the wild wild web in the mid-90s, complete with the blinking Christmas animated .gif as a header, Adult Swim and their stylemasters always seem to have a pleasant surprise up their sleeve.

Dissecting electronic gadgetry for fun

E61 Disassembled

Sooooooooo, how have things been? Good I hope!? Many of you have already noticed a bit of a lull in new posts here around BoN, which I can only chalk up to the amount of work involved in writing for several blogs as well as being part of a scrappy startup. Annnyways. More rock, less talk.

If your screwdrivers speak to you in your sleep and you scoff at manufacturers warranties, then you’re certain to know about TakeItApart.net. If not, you must be still in search for the holy land. Take It Apart is a community and how to resource walking you through the disassembly of various gadgets and electronics, covering everything from toasters to mobile phones. I’ve recently found excellent instructions for taking about a Nokia E61, which were perfect in their quality and detail I must admit (after a successful keyboard and case change). Naturally following the disassembly instructions from Take It Apart will void your warranty, but, I think you’re aware of that already.

RSS for your mobile device, two good apps

  April 18th, 2007 by Nerds

Mobiles

I’m currently setting up my new smart phone so that I can carry around as much of my online data as possible in my pocket. First and foremost, I’m prioritizing the hundreds of RSS feeds in my online reader and putting the most important onto my device, purposely avoiding the default RSS reader shipping on my Symbian phone. So far, I’ve been able to find two interesting mobile apps for storing, reading and organizing your RSS feeds, both of which are sharp-looking, free and easy as pie to operate. Though I haven’t decided on a clear winner yet, I’m still always on the lookout, so if you have any other suggestions, by all means, let me know!

Hit the jump to take a look at my two favorites so far, Mobispine and Widsets..

Will Ferrell gets a visit from his abusive landlord

  April 15th, 2007 by Nerds

Will Ferrell

Backlash all you want, Will Ferrell is a genius at what little he does when on film. Featuring regular Ferrell partner in crime, Adam McKay and a hot new actress known only as Pearl, “The Landlord” is a stunning testimony to working class citizens everywhere who have to deal with abusive landlords on a daily basis. The way Ferrell cowers under the mighty onslaught of abuse is brilliant in a way that just screams Oscar.

Kurt Vonnegut dead at 84

  April 12th, 2007 by Nerds

Kurt Vonnegut

One of the most influential writers in recent history, and one the few remaining writers left to have served in WWII, has passed away at age 84. Vonnegut, author of classics “Slaughterhouse 5″ and “Cat’s Cradle” died Wednesday, apparently as a result of “brain injuries” he suffered in a fall in his home several months ago.

Desktoptwo web-based desktop

Web operating systems unfortunately haven’t caught on yet, but their time is coming, just you wait and see. With connection speeds and performance going up and the complexities many face with organizing their data across multiple workstations and mobile devices, the need for an easy to use and centralized OS is becoming more and more apparent. Desktoptwo is one of a few high quality web operating systems which provide some pretty intense features for the round sum of $0 (my favorite price). Along with 1GB of storage space which you can publicly share with others (file sharing, helloooo), you also have an integrated mail client and address book, web-based IM, office and collaborative apps and a public URL for which to host your personal Desktoptwo blog.

The making of Blade Runner, for the sci-fi nerds

  April 9th, 2007 by Nerds

Blade Runner

Blade Runner is one of the most influential films of all time, especially to sci-fi nerds such as myself. Philip K. Dick was a mad genius was both misunderstood and under-valued during his lifetime of writing, a mistake which now appears to be openly recognized, as Hollywood were scrambling for awhile to dump a load of money into glossy, overly-plastic and poorly executed films based on Dick properties. Most failing miserably at trying to achieve the greatness of Blade Runner. This amazing documentary contains interviews with everyone from Philip K. Dick to Daryl Hannah, discussing their experiences as writers and actors in getting Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” into theaters as “Blade Runner”.

Grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy after the jump..

George Orwell’s house surrounded by CCTV cameras

  April 7th, 2007 by Nerds

Orwell

A depressing reminder of Orwell’s classic novel, ’1984′, a recent study into CCTV camera usage for surveillance in Britain has came out with some startling results. Britain has over 4.2 million CCTV cameras on it’s streets, one for every 14 people in the country, and accounting for over 20% of CCTV cameras globally. It’s theorized that a normal Britain is caught on a CCTV camera hundreds of times a day in and around London. The most ironic piece of news associated with the report is the London neighborhood where Orwell lived until his death in 1950. Within 200 yards of Orwell’s former residence is over 32 CCTV cameras, including the gardens Orwell viewed from his windows, which are covered by 24-hour surveillance from 2 CCTV cameras.

The flat’s rear windows are constantly viewed from two more security cameras outside a conference centre in Canonbury Place.

In a lane, just off the square, close to Orwell’s favourite pub, the Compton Arms, a camera at the rear of a car dealership records every person entering or leaving the pub.

Within a 200-yard radius of the flat, there are another 28 CCTV cameras, together with hundreds of private, remote-controlled security cameras used to scrutinise visitors to homes, shops and offices.

Google Desktop for Mac hits beta

Google Desktop

Wahey! Google showing more Mac love is always a good good thing. I often wondered why Google didn’t put more effort into Mac applications, considering how close Google and Apple work together. Well today I can finally quit wondering and bask in the warm light of Google Desktop for Mac OS X! Still in beta, Google Desktop for the Mac gives you the power of Google.com on your desktop, allowing you to search your local files, web history and even your Gmail email while offline. How big is a Blue Whale? Pretty damn big

  April 4th, 2007 by Nerds

Blue Whale Eyeball

Utilizing modern technology while highlighting a dire situation, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society has created the largest banner ad in the world, a life-size replica of a near-extinct blue whale. Created as a giant flash ad, the blue whale banner ad is true to it’s life-size claim, dragging my poor Mac Mini to a halt and probably enough virtual whale to fill a wall of Apple Cinema Displays. Effective usage of Flash, I must admit.
