Rechargable USB batteries, hot!

USB Batteries

Alright, now we’re getting somewhere! I made the switch to rechargeable batteries years ago, but I’ve always had a nagging issue, that appears I shared with many others: finding the damn charger. Now, problem solved. British technology firm Moixa Energy has created the USBCell, an ingenious invention which houses a normal battery with a flip-top USB plug, allowing you to recharge the battery directly from any USB port in your home or office. This includes directly from a Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii! The batteries need around 5 hours of constant charge to reach 90+/- percent of their 1300mah charge and will run you slightly more than you’d expect from rechargeable batteries, but, in the long-run, you’re doing the right thing for the environment and also looking damn cool while doing it.

The Punk Zine Archive

  May 29th, 2007 by Nerds

Heroin - Gravity Records

Growing up in the punk / hardcore scene during the early 90s was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The energy surrounding the movement, constant traveling, keeping in touch with friends around the world and the live music during this period are things that can never be duplicated. Some of my most exciting memories were grabbing the newest issues of Maximum Rock ‘n Roll and HeartattaCk from my P.O Box (we all had one back then) and instantly flipping through to find the latest 7″ releases from my favorite bands and to find out which bands my favorite writers were hyping. None of us needed MySpace, because we already had one of the most intricate social networks ever created.

These days are now being archived thanks to the Punk Zine Archive, a group of dedicated folks who remember what it was like to find out about new bands from the members themselves, usually while they were looking for a warm spot on your floor to fall asleep before their next show a few hundred miles away. The group are scanning some of the best ‘zines of the time in, digitally preserving them in PDF format and offering them free to download, with permission of course.

The following Maximumrocknroll, Flipside, Suburban Voice, and HeartattaCk punk zines are presented in PDF format for the zine archive. All of these punk zines are out-of-print, and each zine has given me permission to post this information online. All of the pages are included in an attempt to recreate the zines for the Internet, so people can read them for free. It won’t be perfect, but at least you don’t have to shell out big money to read these old punk zines or deal with crooks who sell copies of the zines, but they tell you the zines are original. This punk zine archive only exists because people have supported these zines. Maximumrocknroll, Suburban Voice, and HeartattaCk still have issues that are for sale, so feel free to contact them to pick up an issue (or two).

Think before you post

  May 22nd, 2007 by Nerds

Think

Creep-out city. A recent-ish public service campaign in the US is targeting wired kids, encouraging them to think before they post personal details about themselves on their MySpace, Livejournal or personal blogs. Or in our case, when they aren’t posting (har har har)! The creepy child molester ticket checker asking about her panties? Icing on the cake.

Matthew Fox of Lost gives his Columbia Class Day speech

  May 17th, 2007 by Nerds

Jack Lost

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Columbia University alumnus Matthew Fox (Jack on Lost people!) was asked to do a keynote speech at this year’s Columbia University Class Day festivity. This being a Northeastern university, a small scandal broke out among the student population, with students arguing over whether a more decorated speaker could have been chosen. Fox having graduated with a degree in Economics from Columbia, playing on their varsity football team, being a talented photographer and last but not least, the star of one of the biggest television shows to hit the tubes in recent memory, didn’t seem to be successful enough for many students at one of the nation’s top-10 colleges.

But, Fox pulls it off, giving an amusing, slightly inspiring speech, even though he had to hunch over the podium due to the low microphone. He seemed to connect with the crowd and it’s hard to hear a ‘boo’ anywhere, even when he asks one of his most vocal critics to stand up, wave and say hello, in a nice sort of way.

Watch the speech after the jump, spoiler free!

Apple and others being sued by company for not using its software

  May 14th, 2007 by Nerds

Pirates! All of ye!

Hmm, this is out there. MRT, a California-based development company and creators of the X1 SeCure Recording Control technology, have launched a series of far-reaching lawsuits targeting major media corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, RealNetworks and Adobe. The lawsuit stats basically that these companies are liable for copyright piracy and violating the DMCA by avoiding the usage of their copy-protection technology in their many and various products. Uh huh.

“We’ve given these four companies 10 days to talk to us and work out a solution, or we will go into federal court and file action and seek an injunction to remove the infringing products from the marketplace,” CEO Hank Risan said in a phone interview Friday. According to the MRT, the companies in question are responsible for 98 percent of the market’s media players, which are in turn used by CNN, National Public Radio, Clear Channel, MySpace, Yahoo, YouTube and others.

David Choe paints the Facebook offices

  May 1st, 2007 by Nerds

Face in the stairwell

Artist, muralist, wandering vagabond and admitted petty-thief David Choe was recently contracted out to decorate the Facebook offices with his signature brand of ADD-inspired street art and luckily a friend tagged along to document the process. Though I can’t say Choe’s style of art would inspire one trying to work in an office environment, I guess it does give Facebook the chance at a little .com-style eccentricity.

Few photos and link to more after the jump..

Barbie’s new dog really poops!

  May 1st, 2007 by Nerds

Tanner and Barber

Wow, I can’t believe I snoozed through the press releases that hit when this was released! Barbie, by Mattel, has a wonderful new dog pet named Tanner! Described as “soft and fuzzy with mouth, ears, head and tail that really move”, Tanner also comes with a few new tricks up his sleeve. Not only does he come with a cute little doggy bowl including plastic doggy food, Tanner can also poop the food out which can then be scooped up by Barbie using her handy pooper scooper utensil! The ‘poop’ is comparable in size to a brown Tic-Tac and are reportedly very easy to lose, but fun to count with your kids as Tanner does it’s business throughout the day.

Not safe for Kindergarten and some offices photo after the jump..
