One of the Seven Wonders of the World to be Rebuilt – Colossus of Rhodes to be Twice as Large

  July 28th, 2009 by seth

Though the ancient Colossus of Rhodes – one of the Seven Wonders of the World – only stood for 56 years, word has it that after more than 22 centuries, it will soon stand again - this time made of modern light-weight materials.

The original Colossus, which took twelve years to erect, fell after an earthquake hit the Aegean region. Because none of the pieces survived, noone really knows what the original looked like, but what is known is that the statue did not straddle the port entrance.

Just as the original was constructed from parts of war machinery used by potential invaders of Rhodes, the new structure shall be built from modern-day melted-down weaponry.

When’s it gonna be finished? Hasn’t been announced yet. But I’ll definitely be booking my ticket early!

Whatchoo talkin’ ’bout Willis?! – Chicago’s Sears Tower Renamed

  July 27th, 2009 by seth

Like a stake in the heart, its “officially” no longer the Sears Tower. British insurer, Willis Group, has renamed Chicago’s landmark skyscraper. But how many of us midwesterners are really going along with it? As much as it hurt to lose Indianapolis’s Hoosier Dome to RCA, Willis Group puts salt in the landmark-name-takeover wound. In an effort to change the name back, almost 50K signatures have been collected over at ItsTheSearsTower dot com!

Something Huge Hits Jupiter, Leaves Scar

  July 21st, 2009 by seth

Noone’s quite sure what it was – a comet, possibly – but some large object has plunged into Jupiter, leaving behind a scar-like blemish on its southern region. Apparently, an amateur astronomer first saw the blemish and alerted NASA which confirmed and published the story. The above image was captured just yesterday by one of NASA’s infrared telescopes in Hawaii.

Buzz Aldrin Punches Moon-Landing Conspiracy Theorist

  July 21st, 2009 by seth

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing we’re taking another look at some classic footage of Buzz Aldrin – punching a moon-landing conspiracist in the jowels!

Filmed in 2002, the conspiracy theorist called Aldrin a “liar” and a “coward” claiming the lunar landing never happened and that Aldrin was a fake. The toothless grin he woke up with the next day wasn’t fake. And to add insult to his injury, the L.A. District Attorney wouldn’t press charges against Aldrin. Ouch!

The Pacific – Hanks’ & Spielberg’s “Spiritual Sequel” to Band of Brothers

  July 20th, 2009 by seth

We’re waiting with bated breath! Following their 2001 Emmy-Award winning Band of Brothers, Tom Hanks’ and Steven Spielberg’s latest mini-series, The Pacific, will be aired March 2010 on HBO! Military Technical Advisor, Dale Dye, had this to say:

…it’s very different from “Band.” It’s as different as World War II in the Pacific was from World War II in Europe. It’s much darker and more brutal but that was the nature of fighting on those Pacific islands. Just ask any veteran for confirmation of that. …Hanks [...] likes to say it will take the audience on a brutal journey to hell and back; the same sort of journey that was experienced by the men who fought the real battles.

HBO’s president of international distribution claims The Pacific to be ”the biggest production in the history of television. [...] It’s like making 10 major movies at once.”

Have a look at The Pacific trailer below!
