Ubuntu Studio drops in April

Ubuntu Studio

In case you’ve missed it, which I don’t see *how* on Earth you possibly could, a new Ubuntu fork is coming soon, called Ubuntu Studio. Though I don’t know how they could possibly improve Ubuntu (this coming from an OS X evangelist), Ubuntu Studio will be a special version of Ubuntu Linux aimed at audio, video and graphics enthusiasts and professionals. Though there is little word on what multimedia-specific features Ubuntu Studio will press forward, it has been announced that popular tools such as Audacity and of course, Blender will be included. Ubuntu Studio drops in April, so here’s to waiting breathlessly for yet another reason not to switch to Windows Vista.

Slow postings for the next few days

Please excuse the light postings that we’re giving you this weekend (and early next). We’re currently at several meetings in Vienna, Austria, discussing blogging, social networking and exchanging ideas and information with a room full of nerds. Always a fun experience.

For anyone interested, we are at Barcamp Vienna (currently blogging LIVE!!!) and for the next few days, will be attending Blogtalk Reloaded, two very interesting meetings happening in Vienna this weekend, which we couldn’t resist bringing our special brand of nerdiness to. If anyone happens (by some small chance) to also be in town and attending, feel free to leave look us up, we have beards.

Game on you crazy diamond - Playthrough.net has been reborn

Playthrough.net launch!

Bunch of Nerds now has a family! Well, we always have had family, but, now our blog officially does. Playthrough.net used to be one of the crucial community sites for those involved in the games industry quality assurance field before a tragic, tragic database crash mid-Summer 2006. Shortly after Bunch of Nerds’ quite successful launch (less than 3 months ago WOO!), the decision was made to break off our nerdy posting about the games industry gossip that rolled across our tables daily and turn Playthrough into our outlet for all things gamey. So it’s here, kind of. We are still cleaning up some small bugs here and there, but, you get the gist. So all those interested in lots of gamer-centric jibba jabba from a couple of nerds, feel free to give a visit to Playthrough and give them a virtual wedgie for us.

Bunch of Nerds is under construction Thursday, Aug. 17 (Update 2)

Hi all, many apologies for the lack of posts yesterday (Wed) and today (Thur). We are currently making some layout changes and updating some blog system files, which of course always ends up being more work than initially expected. We’ll be back later tonight or tomorrow with your regular fix for all things nerd. Thanks for your patience. (Note to self, never read a calender before having your morning coffee).

Update 2: Internet Explorer sucks.

Update 1: Sorry for the weirdness folks, things went sour (again) so we’re firefighting some bugs that have popped up.

Fall 2006 television premiere dates

Television!

Whoa where did the time go?! It’s almost Fall premieres season for US television shows, which catches us pretty off-guard to say the least! Thanks to television mega-blog TV Squad, we have a pretty thorough schedule of the upcoming Fall season premieres, starting August 21st with Prison Break on Fox. Fox is starting a touch earlier so they can juggle in their baseball and football commitments during the season, which unfortunately means another large gap in-between episodes of Prison Break (booooo!).

Some choice selections from this Fall season’s upcoming premieres.

  • Monday, Aug. 21
    8:00pm - Prison Break (Fox)
  • Sunday, Sept. 10
    8:00pm - The Simpsons (Fox)
  • Thursday, Sept. 21
8:00pm - My Name is Earl (NBC)
  • Monday, Sept. 25
    9:00pm - Heroes (NBC)
  • Tuesday, Sept. 26
    8:00pm - Gilmore Girls (CW)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 4
    9:00pm - Lost (ABC)
  • Friday, Oct. 6
    9:00pm - Battlestar Galactica (SciFi)

Newsfeed now featuring full-text posts

Hi all you wacky newsfeed subscribers! I just wanted to announce that as of today, our newsfeed will now feature full-text posts, rather than summaries, which we were feeding earlier. The reason for this is that we’ve switched teams (har har spot the Seinfeld reference) and are fully behind giving our newsfeed subscribers our all, especially considering that we’ve switched to an ad-supported newsfeed thanks to our friends over at FeedBurner. So, we hope you enjoy and let your friends know that they’re missing out if they aren’t subscribed. Missing out on what you may ask? Good question.

Membership closed and invitation only

Due to the startling amount of spam that Wordpress allows, public registration to Bunch of Nerds is disabled. Membership is invitation only based on personal referrals, professional respect, and several other factors (tipping us for instance!).

1. Who is able to leave comments on Bunch of Nerds?
Anyone who has been invited by us or our editors. To start the site, we’ve invited a handful of our friends, family, favorite bloggers and frequent tipsters to comment. They have the ability to personally recommend new members to us in order to screen and control user-growth as the site grows. A “Gmail-style” invitation system is currently in the works, at which point we’ll be giving out invitation to our registered members for further distribution.

2. Why is membership invitation only?
As we stated above, comment spam is out of control and this is one of the most effective ways at controlling it, short of disabling comments and membership completely. We also want to spend less time babysitting threads and conversations, and more time hunting out cool stories to post about.

3. How can I become a commenter?
At the moment we’re limiting who is allowed to become a member and commenter. There are however a few ways, if you REALLY want to become a registered commenter.

a) Send us interesting tips [Email address: tips #AT# bunchofnerds.com - replace #AT# with @ ]! We naturally can’t post every tip we receive, but we invite some of our most trustworthy and frequent tippers to comment, as a thanks for helping us make Bunch of Nerds a better place.

b) Persuade us. If you are involved in creating indie games, an artist, toiling away inside of a game developer or publishing company, or someone we’ve mentioned in a past post, we’d be happy to hear from you [Email address: nerds #AT# bunchofnerds.com - replace #AT# with @ ].

c) Create your own blog. Such is the life of a blog, without other bloggers, we wouldn’t exist. We’re happy to include fellow bloggers, so if we post about a story you’ve written on your blog, we’d be happy to hear your input, well, most of the time. ;)

4. Can I comment anonymously?
No, at least not yet. At the startup phase of Bunch of Nerds, we’d prefer to have recognizable commenters who can stand by their thoughts. This is an option for registered members that we’re looking into for the future. Invited users are able to register with whatever username they’d like though, so this give them some control over their identity, we won’t tell, promise.

5. Can I be banned from commenting?
Yes. If your comments are obnoxious, reeking of self-advertisement, or just plain rude, your account can and will be banned. Naturally we have a warning system in place, where we’ll give you a few chances. But, in the end, 3 strikes, you’re out.

As many blogs before us have done so, we recommend you read Lifehackers guide to weblog comments for good pointers on comment etiquette.
