Stills from Hunter S. Thompson’s upcoming photography book, Gonzo

Self-portrait after beating by Hell's Angels

All I should have to say about this is, photos by and of Hunter S. Thompson, on the road, with The Hell’s Angels, heading to Tijuana, Mexico. (!!!!) Pre-order here I come. Thompson had quite the talent, both behind the typewriter and the camera, which is apparent in the upcoming book of photographs, Gonzo, featuring pages of family portraits, candid snapshots and press photos taken by Thompson throughout his years traveling the land and destroying American culture at every stop. Though his death was untimely, it’s good to know that works by Thompson are still being produced by his estate, benefiting fans and future generations alike.

A study of Dune and it’s influence on Star Wars

Dune

The classic science fiction series Dune is one of the major bodies of work in the genre, having influenced many major movie and television films and countless science fiction novels in the time since it’s publishing in the mid-60s. One of the films to be heavily influenced by Dune was Star Wars, an influence that George Lucas is happy to admit to. Surprisingly, there were many homages to Dune in the early Star Wars scripts, though most of the Dune-like scenes were cut, there are still quite a few references in the final works which can easily be identified as clearly being influenced by Herbert’s magnificent work. Thanks to the mega-nerds at Star Wars Origins, there is an extremely informative piece on the history and influences behind Frank Herbert’s Dune and a detailed list of Dune references within the original Star Wars.

Project Gutenberg – Largest collection of free eBooks in the world

Project Gutenberg

Started in 1971, Project Gutenberg is the largest collection of public domain, digitalized books in the world, with over 18,000 books currently in digital form and over 50 new titles being added weekly. Almost all of the eBooks featured in the Gutenberg library are public domain, meaning you are free to download a copy, store it on any form of media you’d like, write a thesis on the book as well as distributing the book along with it, or even if you’re a writer and want to adapt the book to a stage performance. You are also able to volunteer for Gutenberg’s distributed proof-reading project, assisting the project by proof-reading pages from new texts before they are entered into the library. The amount of digital texts available are overwhelming to say the least, with the current top 10 titles being:

#1 The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
#2 Kamasutra by Vatsyayana
#3 The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci — Complete by Leonardo da Vinci
#4 Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases by Grenville Kleiser
#5 How to Speak and Write Correctly by Joseph Devlin
#6 The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen
#7 The Time Machine by H. G. Wells
#8 On the Decay of the Art of Lying by Mark Twain
#9 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
#10 The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
