Not that any of you really care, but I’m one of those odd adults who still dread using public restrooms. Malls, doctor’s offices, restaurants, ok, maybe, highway rest-stops, gas stations, absolutely no way. So, I ask myself, why, why is this a problem? Then I found the ICBE, or the Intenrational Center for Bathroom Etiquette. They too have noticed a complete disregard of manners and common courtesy in public restrooms around the world and have decided to take action. Covering almost every possible situation, from the proper etiquette at men and womens public restrooms, to office restrooms and sporting events restrooms, the ICBE is trying to create change, one urinal at a time.

The Cloud Appreciation Society might be on to something. A small group of cloud watchers, keeping their attention skyward, photographing and documenting the various cloud types and taking advantage of the soothing effects of laying in the grass watching the clouds roll by. You too can take part in the society, either by submitting photos to the gallery or maybe even supporting them by purchasing cloud-loving gear, like shirts or the society’s first book, “The Cloudspotter’s Guide” on Penguin Press. Down with blue-sky thinking, that’s what I say.

Did I miss something? I knew the how-to was one of the most overused stories to get a blogger more linkbacks and rankings, but where did all these how-to video sites popup from? I’m not complaining really cause I love these sites and love learning new and often times useless tricks and DIY. Instructables and Video Jug are both extremely useful video sharing sites with a focus on how-tos and distribution of knowledge, one of the many great uses of this here internet thingy we’re filling up pipes with. Both are social internet services, allowing users to sign up, download, rate and create video how-tos and share them among their similarly DIY-addicted friends. Quick hint fellas, over at Video Jub there’s a how-to on the front page for giving yourself a testicular exam!

It happens to me all the time that I’m listening to a song and wondering what they hell the artists are going on about. Is that broken shell they’re singing about symbolic of the rough life they had growing up as teens in the USA or did they just have mishap making breakfast and felt it was traumatic enough to try and build a career out of? Well, thanks to the internet, and more specifically, SongMeanings.net, most of my questions have been answered. SongMeanings.net is a user-driven database of song lyrics, which is nothing new in itself, but this time with a twist. The goal behind SongMeanings is to allow users not only to talk about their mis-heard lyrics, but also to discuss and provide their views on the actual meanings behind their favorite songs. A lot of the times, it’s pure speculation, but, quite often we have solid sources on what exactly was going on in the artist’s head when they were singing about purple skies and raining fish.

In a very interesting move, Linden Labs are starting a service-wide shutdown of their external user-forums, in order to transition communication and sharing of information in-world, through the use of in-world blogs, forums, and new communication channels being developed. Forums were already set to members-only, however, Linden Labs admitted that significant resources go into the maintenance of external forums and rightfully state that those resources should focus on the Second Life world, rather than external gossip and drama. The closures will occur over the coming months, so forum junkies won’t all be cut-off from their stuff at once.

Tucked away in our tip box this morning was an email pointing us to a huge community of writers, posting their latest original works online for all to read, share and enjoy. Featuring over 144,000 writers and over 890,000 original works covering pretty much all of genres from fiction to poetry to sci-fi. The bar for entry is basically nil, allowing any writer access to a large community for which to showcase their works, and allowing readers a huge cache of pieces to feast their hungry eyes on.

Keeping on with my internet community fetish, we come to the extremely packed Kubrick Multimedia Film Guide, a large site serving as a major source of information for the brilliant works of director and producer Stanley Kubrick. Contained within this site is a large (and growing) gallery of posters and promotional art from past Kubrick films dating back to the 1950s on through to Eyes Wide Shut. Poster and promotional pieces from films such as 2001, Lolita, Clockwork Orange, The Shining and Paths of Glory are on display, with more being added as the collection grows, which hopefully it does. The posters from 2001 were just pure brilliance, this coming from a NASA and design nerd.

SERENITY NOW!!! We love the Seinfeld crew here and are watching and re-watching episodes like there’s no tomorrow. While we consider ourselves hardcore fans, we’d never consider ourselves hardcore enough to recreate Seinfeld episodes in our living room. Which is exactly what we can now do thanks to the mega Seinfeld community site, Seinfeld Chronicles. Other than having info and trivia on just about everything ever mentioned through Seinfeld’s 9 seasons, they also have an archive with every script for every episode ever filmed, including the pilot-episode! As I mentioned before, I’m always amazed at the communal power of the internet, espcially when that power is benefiting a community I consider myself a part of.

Frank: You’re late again, Costanza, so listen up. Starting tonight, we’re having a little sales contest. The loser gets fired, the winner gets a Waterpik.

Estelle: (From another room) You’re not giving away our Waterpik!

Frank: Serenity now!

George: You know what? It doesn’t matter, because I quit!

Frank: I guess your mother was right. You never could compete with Lloyd Braun! (Lloyd rings his sale bell and smiles)

George: You wanna sell computers? I will show *you* how to sell computers! Hello, Mr. Farneman. You wanna buy a computer? No? Why not? All right, I see! Good answer! Thank you! (Lloyd rings his sale bell)

Serenity now!
