Candela-style lights plugged into batteries make the perfect mood lighting

LED candle replacements

The Candela light is a great little invention for home decor and lighting fanatics. Providing a brilliant warm light source comparable to the intensity of 1.5 candles, the Candela uses long-life warm LED light sources, running for 8 hours on a rechargeable ni-cd battery. Though a bit pricey, designer Richard Lawson has come up with another brilliant innovation, the 9vo(l)tive LED candle. By combining the idea of the Candela light with a simple battery-driven LED mod, they’ve created the ultimate low-cost candle-light replacement for nerds. Though, we can’t stress enough how important it would be to use rechargeable 9 volts for these little projects. Interested? Contact the designer at richi(at)forpeople.co.uk.

Musical wind-up toys by Maywa Denki

Wind up toys

I’ve always loved wind-up toys and being the spaceage bachelor that I am (ok, not really), I’ve always wanted to start a small collection of all the strange wind-up toys I’ve come across. From politician’s heads, to food, to space aliens and cartoons, the variety is crazy. Now I’ve found the Knockman Family, from designer Maywa Denki. Each character makes their own absurd movements, making some sort of ‘musical’ noise while capturing dada-esque design perfectly. Only a matter of time before some electronica artist in Japan (or Canada) is using this group to create live noise.

Triball – Three player, 3D Tic-Tac-Toe

Triball - 3D Tic Tac Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe finally gets an upgrade (Tic-Tac-Toe 2.0?) with the release of Triball, a three player, 3D version of every child’s favorite pen and paper game. The game consists of a transparent box of plastic, partitioned into 9 columns, where three players take turns dropping colored balls into the row, with the ultimate goal being to get three of your colors in any direction, including diagonally . A cool little toy to sit on any connected worker’s office shelf.

Properly design a flag for your new kingdom

Flags

The North American Vexillological Association (Vexillology is the study of flags) are hardcore in their love of flags of all sorts. NAVA analyzes flags from around the world and around the US, discussing well-designed and not-so-well-designed flags and what you can do to make design a better one. Most importantly, NAVA provides and in-depth how-to for creating your own flag to fly when you decide to invade your neighbor or form a new guild in World of Warcraft. For those about to design their own flag, remember the 5 basic principles of good flag design:

1. Keep It Simple
The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory…

2. Use Meaningful Symbolism
The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it
symbolizes…

3. Use 2–3 Basic Colors
Limit the number of colors on the flag to three, which contrast well and
come from the standard color set…

4. No Lettering or Seals
Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seal…

5. Be Distinctive or Be Related
Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections…

Famous logos re-designed for web 2.0

Web 2.0 the mainstream

The designavists over at Yay Hooray have started a huge thread of traditionally mainstream or “famous” logos being re-designed to be more web 2.0. There are quite some gems and a hell of a lot of aqua and gradients going on, but man, the ABC, Citi, and Nike logo re-imagines are good stuff. Thanks to a Digg of the thread, we’re getting a lot of interesting gripes on what web 2.0 is and isn’t, which is almost as entertaining as the actual redesigns themselves!

Tetris-inspired bookshelves

Tetris shelves

Tetris lovers of the world listen up, next time you’re redectorating your flat, skip Ikea (though we love our Expedit here in the HQ) and go straight for the Tetris-inspired bookshelves from Brave Space. The Tetris unit is lightweight and modular, allowing owners to mount the blocks on the wall, leave them free-floating for life-size gameplay, or stack the blocks on top of one another. There are also colored backshapes available to match your interior color choices.
