David Lynch documentary kookily inspiring

David Lynch

Watching David Lynch work is always a hugely interesting trip, the smoking, the glassy-eyed look and the creepy finger twitches, I love it. DIVX has constructed a wonderful digital documentary with David Lynch describing his creative process using digital film, following him on-set of the production of his latest short film (a film which already looks quite odd). You’ll need the DIVX web player plugin (you should be asked to download it on page visit) to watch, but, it’s definitely worth it!

The making of Blade Runner, for the sci-fi nerds

Blade Runner

Blade Runner is one of the most influential films of all time, especially to sci-fi nerds such as myself. Philip K. Dick was a mad genius was both misunderstood and under-valued during his lifetime of writing, a mistake which now appears to be openly recognized, as Hollywood were scrambling for awhile to dump a load of money into glossy, overly-plastic and poorly executed films based on Dick properties. Most failing miserably at trying to achieve the greatness of Blade Runner. This amazing documentary contains interviews with everyone from Philip K. Dick to Daryl Hannah, discussing their experiences as writers and actors in getting Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” into theaters as “Blade Runner”.

Grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy after the jump..

Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision

Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson was a man before his time, or, from another time, or maybe just a bit insane, in that gifted sort of way. This documentary, filmed by BBC in 1978, followed around Thompson, featuring several interviews on his image, his books and his wacky experiences traveling the country leaving large amounts of unanswered questions and destruction in his wake.

Trailer for Waiting for NESARA, documentary about religious conspiracy theory

NESARA

I hope I won’t regret this post, but let’s just see how this goes. So, what does September 11th, Jesus Christ flying a UFO, a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise and George W. Bush have in common? Stumped? Well, NESARA of course! NESARA stands for National Economic Security and Reformation act, a bill allegedly passed during a secret session of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by Bill Clinton. The bill supposedly would reorganize the entire U.S. economy and government, through acts such as forgiveness of bank, credit and mortgage debt, abolishing the IRS by creating a flat, new items only sales tax, restores constitutional law and naturally, ends all forms of aggressive U.S. military activities world wide. An admirable bill, I must admit, if only it were true.

NESARA a hotly contested conspiracy theory, with several splinter groups preaching various degrees of madness, features one such group that has recently seen the release of it’s first documentary (though often billed as a comedy) titled “Waiting for NESARA”. Following an organized group of ex-Mormons awaiting the passage of NESARA around Salt Lake City, Utah, the group meets in the back of a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise and believes that the passage of NESARA will bring about the removal of George W. Bush by exposing him as a reptilian alien and that Jesus Christ piloting a UFO will be installed as America’s new leader.

I’m now rendered speechless so hit the jump to witness the trailer for Waiting for NESARA…

Video documentary on the life of skater Natas Kaupas

Natas Kaupas deck

When I was a kid, Natas Kaupas was one of the kings of street skating and absolutely one of my skating heroes. In fact, he was one of the first skaters to take to the street, mixing freestyle moves with vert skating tricks, riding the concrete as if riding waves and pulling off amazing moves on ordinary street objects while the skating world were too busy worrying about how much air they could get off a half-pipe. Recently, a short documentary was made on the life of Natas Kaupus (in a series on street skating), which, naturally has made it’s way to YouTube (but probably not for long).

Watch an excellent four-part documentary on Natas Kaupas after the jump..

Video documentary on William S. Burroughs II from 1984

William Burroughs at home

William S. Burroughs was a troubled, troubled man, as everyone already knows. This documentary, filmed in 1984, follows Burroughs through his daily life, taking a visit back to his hometown as well as meeting Burroughs’ brother Mortimer, and speaking with many of his friends, family and colleagues, discussing their takes on Burroughs’ life and works. Some great interviews and scenes are contained within, from a short interview with William S. Burroughs III (JR), Burroughs’ troubled and estranged son, some great shots of Ginsberg talking with Burroughs about Jack Kerouc (calling him a great writer who wrote some book called “on the route” and became well known), as well as an interesting tour of Burroughs’ New York City “Bunker”, a window-less apartment retreat that actually looked like a nuclear bunker. A choice quote from Burroughs himself: “My whole life has been resistance to the ugly spirit”.

Grab some popcorn, get comfortable and watch the documentary after the jump..

Watch Carl Sagan’s epic documentary, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage

Cosmos

Hold on to your bandwidth, cause this is a monster post. Cosmos: A Pesonal Voyage was a 13-part documentary series studying the origin of life and our place in the universe, produced in 1978 and 1979 in Los Angeles by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter for PBS. The budget was huge for a public-television documentary at the time, clocking in at roughly $8.3 million US, with it being rumoured that the LA affiliate, KCET, went into heavy debt due to it’s production. But it all worked out in the end, with the documentary being a huge hit, winning an Emmy and Peabody Award and being broadcast in more than 60 countries by over 600 million people. Cosmos was the most widely watched series in the history of public television until the 1990’s Civil War documentary.
