Terry Jones, star of Monty Python has cancer

Monty Python

It’s been reported over the weekend that Monty Python stay Terry Jones has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital in London. The talk is that they’ve caught it soon enough and hopes are high that treatment will be successful, but, still, cancer is nothing to play around with, so let’s all hope for the best. Monty Python’s Spamalot has just opened on London’s West End, where Jones was in attendance, enjoying himself and posing for pictures along with Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam.

2001 meets Office Space in YouTube mashup

Milton!

2001 meets Office Space in this odd, but somewhat enjoyable video mashup courtesy of the GooTube. A shame they didn’t use some of Milton’s dialogue, because, well, he’s Milton and there’s no one better, but, still, it’s good enough. After watching, proceed straight to the “Which Office Space character am I?” quiz over at Quizilla.

WarGames sequel promises to disappoint

WarGames

With recent rumblings about a WarGames sequel underway, we were happy when reports disappeared, perhaps signaling that it was in-fact a bad idea to try and follow up on one of the greatest early 80s sci/fi classics. But now we’ve heard that a sequel is in-fact beginning production in Montreal, Canada this November. Directed by Stuart Gillard (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II) will direct War Games 2: The Dead Game, a guaranteed straight-to-DVD bomb. The story is reported to be about a teenage hacker “whose world gets turned upside-down after playing an online terrorist attack simulator game against a government super-computer designer to profile potential terrorists”. It seems the hacker targeted Washington or something so Homeland Security is deployed to intercept this terrorist before he can do real harm. Those interested in re-making WarGames should just go out and buy DEFCON by Introversion Software and play a few rounds of full-on WarGames-inspired indie gaming brilliance.

The original Matrix theatrical trailer, recreated by muppets

Muppet Matrix

3 friends one day decided that the theatrical trailer of The Matrix just wasn’t good enough, it was missing something, some ‘oomph’ that would take it to the next level. That ‘oomph’ turned out to be, The Muppets. Thus, the Muppet Matrix was born. Taking 2 months, the creators took the original Matrix trailer, replaced all of the major characters with 10 fully animated 3D muppets, and 150 shots later, The Muppet Matrix was born, a complete remake of the original theatrical trailer for The Matrix, featuring unofficial Muppet look-alikes.

Idaho passed a bill commending production of Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon Dynamite

This blew straight past me, but it seems in 2005, the state of Idaho passed a bill commending Jared and Jerusha Hess for the production of the indie film Napoleon Dynamite. The state of Idaho wanted to commend the Hess’ on a job well done and for portraying Idaho in a favorable light, by showing off it’s scenery, increasing tourism and economic growth in the area where the film’s production took place. There is also a great list of what the state of Idaho finds as positive moments within the movie, such as promoting tater tots made from Idaho’s #1 export (the potato), providing a testament to Idaho’s athletics with Uncle Rico’s football skills, and promoting self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship among the small towns of Idaho with Rico’s Tupperware sales and Deb’s keychain and glamour shots business (!?). The list goes on and I recommend everyone read it through

First four pages of the Transformers script and lots of behind the scenes photos

Transformers the movie

Oh Transformers, how I worry for your legacy. With the new Transformers movie currently in production looking to MTV-ify one of my favorite childhood memories it’s interesting to see some of the many modernizations to some of my favorite characters from the television show and movie. It seems we’re not alone in our hunt for Transformers info, with the super-sleuths at Film Wad coming on strong with what appears to be leaked copies of the first 4 pages of the Transformers script, giving us a little peek into what we can expect from the beginning of the film, due out July 4, 2007. Naturally a spoiler warning needs to be given here, so, there you go.

Gallery of vintage sex-ed movie posters

Sexual education films

I wouldn’t go so far as saying these were movies teaching sexual education, more like banging pots and pans and jumping up and down, which was pretty prevalent in mid-20th century US. That’s not to say we don’t enjoy seeing a few of these propaganda films and enjoying a bit of popcorn with friends. A LiveJournal post has collected a few photos of brilliant vintage movie posters from the golden era of propaganda and scare tactics, featuring several different variations for VD classics “Devil in the Flesh” and “Damaged Goods”.

Goodbye Pan and Scan, we hardly knew ya

Goodbye Pan and Scan

Everything television and movie DVD blog Pan and Scan have sadly announced their closure, after 4 long and hard months of reporting us all the goings on in the world of the digital video disc. The closure is due to a lack of revenue it seems, even though they were doing quite a stellar job for television and movie junkies. Their’s will be hard shoes to fill, but, it seems they already have a candidate for us to go and get our release dates for our favorite television DVD sets. All the best for the future Pan and Scanners.

Kung Fu versus Yoga

Kung Fu vs. Yoga

I couldn’t write a more descriptive title if I tried. In the mid to late 1970s Hong Kong action movies were hitting their prime and nothing proves that more than the aptly titled, “Kung Fu versus Yoga”. Two fighters are battling over who will win the heart of a beautiful maiden when they have to take on a yoga-fighter extraordinaire whose ability to contort his body is at first very difficult for the traditional Kung Fu style to overcome. All of the requirements for 70′s low-brow martial arts cinema are present, from the highly-choreographed fighting to the lighthearted banter between enemies, I hope this is a film that every serious Hong Kong action fan has in their collection (both the original and the Dolemite collection re-release!).
