Huckabee in Israel, Carville in Afghanistan, Obama Targeted as “Anti-Semitic Jew-Hater”

Crazy comes in many forms. First, James Carville was invited to advise Ghani’s presidential campaign in Afghanistan. Now Huckabee’s been invited to promote Israeli expansion into Palestinian territory by a group of far-right religious settlers. I’m just wondering: are these two guys culturally/ideologically sensible per the ins and outs of these regions?

Huckabee has stated that he supports Israeli expansion and settlement building in the West Bank. He is also opposed to the establishment of a Palestinian state. Huckabee actually cares?! Or does he believe such a move will appeal to American Jewish sentiment with something up his sleeve for 2012? In any case, Huckabee is the honored guest of the Ateret Cohanim, a right-wing religious group planning twenty apartment projects in East Jerusalem. Obama has vented his disapproval of Israeli expansion, causing the far-right to protest with banners reading, “Barak Hussein Obama: Anti-Semitic, Jew-Hater.” So yes, crazy does, indeed, come in many forms.

Trouble determaning your presidential candidate?

If you’re like most people in America, you’re either not interested in any of the candidates seeking nomination for president, or you’re unable to actually determine the difference between any of them. That’s where Glassbooth comes in! Using some of web 2.0′s buzzword technologies, Glassbooth walks you through a quick and simple quiz, where you’ll also determine your key points of interest in this year’s campaign. Doing the quiz myself and having a few friends do it, we were all pretty surprised at the accuracy of the results, accurately recommending to us the candidates we were already supporting.

Rumor: Al Gore announcing run for presidency at Oscars

An Inconvenient Truth

With the Oscars approaching fast, Al Gore and Laurie David’s movie, “An Inconvenient Truth” is all but locked in for winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary, meaning we’ll get a nice rousing acceptance speech from Al Gore. With that knowledge, a rumor appears to be burning through the political elite that Al Gore is going to announce his candidacy for president while accepting his Oscar. Such an announcement would not only be a first, but an amazing surprise, eclipsing schnitzel-buddy Arnie’s announcement on Jay Leno’s show.

My opinion on both rumors? For the Best Documentary Oscar, I think his movie is a shoe-in, for Best Presidential run announcement, I’ll remain a little skeptical. Gore, while just right for what is ailing the country, is able to accomplish much more in the private sector than most could in the public, so I think he’s comfortable where he’s at. Now, a Gore/Obama or Gore/Edwards ticket would set this country alight and would win my vote instantly.

Pirate Bay attempting to buy Sealand, create sovereign nation

Buy Sealand

Those often-times lovable fighters for internet freedom, Pirate Bay and the ACFI, have launched their latest campaign highlighting the touchy subjects of copyrights and the people’s right to an open and accessible internet. Their latest plan is to purchase the recently listed (and contested) sovereign nation of Sealand and turn it into a safe-haven for internet file sharers, creating their own nation, friendly to unabashed digital distribution over the internet. Though the chances are slim that the purchase is successful, Pirate Bay are giving it their best, launching a fund raising campaign where, anyone who donates will receive automatic citizenship on the newfound nation of the Pirate Bay (my name, not theirs). The rumored selling price of Sealand has been anywhere from $900 million USD to $2 billion USD, which makes me a touch skeptical that the fund raising efforts will result in purchase, however, administrators of the Pirate Bay have announced that no matter how much they are able to collect, they will use the money to purchase an island somewhere, attempting to declare it as a sovereign nation.

Meta-poll tracking for the upcoming US elections

Electoral Vote.com

With the November mid-term elections rapidly approaching in the U.S., it’s time once again to get all worked up over polling numbers and argue over which group of politicians will be in charge of helping themselves rather than the residents of the United States. My favorite site for keeping up to date with the state by state polling is Electoral Vote, the horribly yellow, but oddly appealing meta-poll site, which collects day to day polling results from the top polling institutes, whether they be Democratic or Republican, and averages them together, giving us an untainted look at the polling numbers being tossed around the country. If you can actually consider polling to be untainted.

Stewart/Colbert 2008 unfortunately not gonna happen

Jon Stewart / Stephen Colbert 2008

In a recent interview Jon Stewart cleared up the recent wishful-thinking that he’s pursuing a run for president in the 2008 elections, having sidekick Stephen Colbert as his running mate. With fans starting Stewart/Colbert 2008 websites, campaigns and of course, merchandise, Stewart’s only response was to comment on how sad people are with the current affairs of the country under George W Bush. Though a Stewart/Colbert ticket would probably be one of the best things to happen to American politics in decades, it’s sadly not gonna happen, but at least you can have a few cool t-shirts letting the world know that you’re behind them 100%.

What exactly is George W. Bush’s job? Jon Stewart asks the hard questions

Jon Stewart and George W. Bush BFF

On a recent Daily Show, Jon Stewart asks some really hard questions, such as, what exactly is the president’s job? Curiously, it doesn’t seem that anyone really knows what it is, other than a few vague comments and lots of fund-raising, but, we’re told it’s not our business to really even care. But is that enough for Jon Stewart, noooo, of course not, it’s never enough.

Watch a clip from a recent Daily Show and wonder along with Jon after the jump..

Idaho passed a bill commending production of Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon Dynamite

This blew straight past me, but it seems in 2005, the state of Idaho passed a bill commending Jared and Jerusha Hess for the production of the indie film Napoleon Dynamite. The state of Idaho wanted to commend the Hess’ on a job well done and for portraying Idaho in a favorable light, by showing off it’s scenery, increasing tourism and economic growth in the area where the film’s production took place. There is also a great list of what the state of Idaho finds as positive moments within the movie, such as promoting tater tots made from Idaho’s #1 export (the potato), providing a testament to Idaho’s athletics with Uncle Rico’s football skills, and promoting self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship among the small towns of Idaho with Rico’s Tupperware sales and Deb’s keychain and glamour shots business (!?). The list goes on and I recommend everyone read it through

Whew, fries are French again on Capitol Hill

Freedom Fries French again!

Whew, we can all breath a major sigh of relief today knowing that on Capitol Hill, the cafeteria for the House of Representatives has gone back to calling fries French, rather than Freedom. In case anyone’s forgotten, 3 years ago, US citizens wasted their tax money on elected representives squabbling over changing the name of French Fries in their cafeteria to Freedom Fries as a way of striking back at France for not supporting the Iraq war. Well after many a sleepless nights by the French, those days are finally over, as Republican Reps now flip-flop away from Rep. Bob “Freedom Fries” Ney who was recently forced from the chairmanship in charge of House operations, has also called for the removal of US troops from Iraq. Naturally this is non-news now and should have been then, but seriously, freedom fries?
