There are 16,000,000 creepy eyes in NYC..

…and it appears that all of them are supposed to be watching you. The New York Transportation Authority’s security campaign seeks to turn normal citizens into spies by encouraging travelers to keep their eyes and ears open, spotting terrorist activity on buses and subways around the city. There must be a less-creepy way of encouraging self-awareness among citizens without hints of neighbors spying on neighbors?

Gallery of anti-alcohol posters from the Soviet propaganda era

Soviet poster art

Ah, the Soviets, you had such style, such grace, you just couldn’t get past that whole human nature thing. The Soviet propaganda era is a brilliant time in graphic design history, with some of the starkest style in visual design and some damn nice color combinations, who needs all this digital mess we have today? Not I! To remind us of this wonderful era’s visual output, we have great sites such as The Soviet Museum of Anti-Alcohol Posters, which is a gallery-site, featuring over 30 brilliant posts from (I’d say) the early to mid-20th century.

Another gallery of soviet propaganda poster art

You're not seeing what you're doing

In our previous posting we saw post-WWII (1940s-1950s) Soviet propaganda poster art, now we have a mega-gallery of posters, featuing over 1200 pieces and covering the years 1917 until 1991, the hayday of Mother Russia design. Many of these works are stunning, with of course many striking tones of red used throughout. I hope many of these originals are well-preserved.

Gallery of travel posters from the 1920’s and 1930’s

Golden Age of Travel

The Los Angeles Public Library system is having a virtual art show featuring brilliantly drawn art deco (some futurist) travel posters from the 1920s and 1930. The Golden Age of Travel as it’s called, these posters emphasis that traveling was once a stylish and graceful experience, opposite of what we experience today on basically any flight with other people on it. Some of the highlights include the Orient Lines poster and some beautiful early airline travel posters (Air France is lovely). This is the first time that the LA Library System has shared it’s collection, which is quite exciting for the inner art-nerd in us.
