Create your very own desktop factory with a home 3D printer

3dprinter.jpg

3D printing technology is one of my most anticipated technological advancements. Sure it’s been around for awhile, but, it’s just not there quite yet, not until we can walk into Staples and easily walk out with our very own personal 3D printing device. The engineers behind the Desktop Factory are working hard on making this a reality, with their personal 3D printer, currently being tested for use in the engineering and design fields. The printer can take your 3D mock up and mold a durable, functional model from the bottom up, one layer at a time in sturdy composite plastic. The composite plastic material can easily be sanded down and painted making it of special use to industrial designers who rely on turnaround time. The Desktop 3D printer measures just 25x20x20 inches and weighs less than 90lbs, meaning it won’t take up too much space in your factory or design studio.

Not for sale yet, the 3D printer is currently undergoing a pre-sale, with a target price of $5,000 to $7,000 dollars US. As Desktop Factory says, imagine when your child can design their own small toy model or order a design off the internet, then simply ‘print’ it out and paint it. I can’t wait for the future.

Saint B MP3 player, holy tunes man

Saint B MP3 player

Want a flash-based MP3 player that not only let’s you jam your christian rock, but also show the world what religion you identify with? Then the Saint B MP3 player will be perfect for you. Only a prototype for now, this is most certainly a product I see being mass produced and selling quite well. A flash-memory based MP3 player in a chrome-plated steel frame, shaped like a cross, the Saint B also features an OLED display covered by a semi-transparent piece of plastic. Charging and login are done via USB and the overall size is 92x64x11mm. Star of David coming soon?

Moller M400X Skycar prototype up for sale on eBay

Moller M400X Skycar

Why we’re all not in flying cars yet, I’ll never know, but, I know one thing, if you’re filthy stinking rich you can be. The Moller M400X Skycar prototype, which has demonstrated it’s hovering abilities many times at the Moller facilities is now up for auction via eBay. The Skycar is of course a prototype and can’t really ‘fly’ yet, but, hey, if you’re rich enough to buy it, you should be rich enough to continue developing this amazing piece of aviation history. Current bidding is around the $2 million mark with estimates at $4 million for a final sale and yes, you do have to complete a background check as this thing is most certainly considered a weapon.

Watch video of the M400X hovering after the jump..

Backpack concept for basketball players

Basketball backpack

All you street basketball players listen up, the ever-inspiring Yanko Design weblog have discovered a beautifully designed backpack which will make your urban pick-up games a little bit easier to get to. Not only does the bag feature well-crafted swooping lines and what appears to be a hardshell backing with luggage-style handle, but the bag makes the basketball a part of it, with an ingenious recessed pocket which holds the basketball firm to your back while not in use. This is unfortunately just a prototype, but this is a concept I absolutely expect to see in production extremely soon.

Five panel widescreen LCD monitor

The Athens Display by L-Computers

Meet the Athens Display Series monitors from L-Computers, a publicly traded OEM manufacturer of computer hardware from Pakistan (I believe). It appears that L is working on prototypes of high-end designer computer hardware, no doubt attempting to market to the high-performance gaming and graphics markets with thier quad SLI components and high-spec pre-built rendering machines and servers. Their Athens Display Series are a beautiful collection of (3D rendered) ulta-slim LCD monitors in multiple configurations, from 2-5 widescreen LCDs with resolutions up to an amazing 19200 x 2400 pixels at 16.7 million colors. The concepts are beautiful and I’d most certainly love to have a monitor setup almost the size of my office wall, but they don’t appear to have any real information or screenshots featuring a full view of the system, which makes me a bit skeptical to say the least.

Physics enabled desktop replacement

BumpTop - Physics enabled desktop replacement

Are we seeing the future of human computer interaction? Could we see this desktop replacement reviving the slowly dying tablet computer market? The brilliant mind of university student Anand Agarwala has created the prototype for BumpTop, a fully-featured, physics-enabled desktop replacement, which enables the user to ‘push’ around their documents using expressive and lightweight techniques found in the real world. While I could only try and explain how it works, I encourage you (all) to watch the video and be amazed (hopefully). As one of our resident nerds says, “revolutionary”, we agree.
