Contribute to the junkyard of photographic art

Deleted Images

Everyone with a digital camera has had photos that just had to be deleted. Blurred, boring, out of frame, blinking strangers, the list of reasons is endless. Now, instead of deleting them outright, revive them, by contributing your photos to Deleted Images, a group dedicated to bringing undesired snapshots back to life. What may be junk to you, may be art to others.

Online documentary covering the history of Washington DC punk and hardcore

DC punk and hardcore

Wow. My friends, the future is here and this is possibly the greatest use of this here interent thing I’ve ever experienced. Yellow Arrow is a communal, social internet mobile mashup technology, allowing users to create mobile tours, viewable over the internet, but more precisely, mobile phone tours to be conducted in real-time whenever you find an “arrow” in presumably any country that Google Maps covers. To beautifully demonstrate the power of Yellow Arrow, an interactive mobile walking tour and online documentary about the Washington DC punk/hardcore scene was created, where physical and virtual users are able to take the walking tour of where everything happened in DC punk, watching 10 mini-documentaries, featuring interviews with Alec Mackaye, Brendan Canty, Cynthia Connolly, Ian Mackaye, Ian Svenonius, and many many many more who were there when it all began and who graciously share their fondest memories with us.

SwarmSketch - Online collective sketch art

SwarmSketch

Brilliant brilliant brilliant. I love SwarmSketch and find myself wasting way too much time throughout the day voting on other user’s strokes. SwarmSketch is basically an ongoing collective sketch, where users are allotted a certain amount of strokes per visit with which they are allowed to add to the collective drawing. After their allotted strokes are used, the user then is invited to vote on other user’s strokes, in effect darkening up-voted strokes and lightening down-voted strokes. Every week, a popular search term is chosen randomly, which determines the sketch subject, with this week’s subject being the subject of “Mythbusters”. Come join the collective.

Bed jumpers of the world share your photos

Bed Jumpers photography

Everyone loves a little bed jumping, especially on those springy uncomfortable hotel beds. Meet the Bed Jumpers, a small, but rapidly growing group of normal folk, who can’t resist getting a little massive air during their travels around the world. The Bed Jumpers have setup a great Flickr photo pool, where their jumps and tumbles are being displayed and shared for all to see and enjoy. Have your own Bed Jumps you’d like to share? Then by all means, join the community and start uploading photos of yourself in nighties destroying hotel property. If you haven’t experienced a massive bed jump, run into your bedroom and go for it, you’ll thank us later.

Korean social network, Cyworld launches in the US

Cyworld - South Korean social network system

South Korean mega-social network Cyworld has launched in the US, bringing another avatar-based social system to the already crowded US market. Cyworld is a giant in South Korea, with reportedly 90% of the population under the age of 20 registered to the service, which is a market share I doubt they’ll ever see here in the US. Cyworld ties in a web-game with social networking, allowing the user to create their own personalized cartoon avatar and Minihome to personalize and invite friends to visit. There is even an in-world currency (not currently present in the US version) where users can purchase more Cyworld Currency (Acorns?) in exchange for real-world currency (not sure if that works vice-versa). I unfortunately don’t see this service taking off stateside, as their reliance on the younger market just doesn’t translate over to the US and with services like MySpace and Facebook currently struggling to define themselves in the youth market, it makes it that much rougher for Cyworld.

Track and discuss your favorite television shows

Episode World - Track and discuss your favorite television shows

Episode World is a diamond in the rough of community sites, allowing users to update, track, and discuss their favorite television shows. Registered users control the content, by submitting new episodes, synopsis, episode and season numbers, and reviews. Some nifty features on the site are abilities such as bookmarking your favorite episode for quick access to season and episode guides, as well as being able to track which episodes you’ve recently watched. For instance, after watching the last episode of Deadwood (which I hope you all did), you are able to go and checkmark the episode as watched, and this way, you don’t forget which episode you left when it comes to watching again. Kudos to you Episode World.

From the EPW FAQ:

EPisodeWorld.com (short EPW) offers information about TV-Shows. The information offered includes but is not limited to plot outlines, airdates, episode names, main as well as guest cast, and more to come. It’s best described as an online TV Guide, so you can read up on your favorite shows and will know when the next episodes will air. Registered users can actively participate in keeping the information up-to-date by submitting changes to existing episodes or submitting new episodes. Registered users can also customize the information displayed (e.g. language) and can keep track of their favorite shows via bookmarks and mark episodes as watched.

Pixelated New York City as social network

Pixelized New York City

City Pixel have created a breath-taking pixelated replica of New York City and merged into a giant internet city-as-social network. Registration is free and users are able to explore the city, shop, rent apartments, use public transportation and even make in-world “calls” to other pixelcitizens on the public telephones available throughout the city. Take 1 part Second-Life, 1 part MySpace, and lots of pixels later, you have a New York-style playground for you to explore and meet new people. City Pixel is currently in production on their second city, rumored to be London, which is leading their user-polls for what should come next.
