World’s first chainsaw powered motorcycle

Chainsaw Cycle

Dolmar, a manufacturer of hardcore chainsaws, for those who want real power when destroying things, has created the first chainsaw powered motorcycle named the Dolemite. Using 24 PS-7900 chainsaws, which has the best power-to-weight ratio of any chainsaw in the world, the cycle can deliver 125 kW of power with 130 Nm of torque (ie. a hell of a lot). The fully assembled bike weighs a little over 300 kg, with a power-to-weight ration of 1.8 kg/PS.

Watch a little more about the Dolemite after the jump..

Self-cleaning underwear can stay fresh for weeks

Smelly

Scientists working for the Air Force have created t-shirts and underwear that can be worn hygienically for weeks without having to be washed. By attaching nanoparticles to clothing fiber using microwaves, then binding special chemicals that repel water, oil and bacteria, scientists have created a protective coating on the clothing, forcing liquids to simply bead up and run off. Naturally the US military was behind the innovation, which could revolution the sports industry as well as the killing industry. The total cost for research and development came to around $20 million and is intended to protect soldiers in the future from biological weapon attacks, much like the attacks seen during Desert Storm, which actually killed more soldiers than accidents and friendly fire.

Reactable is hopefully the electronic music instument of the future

Reactable

Many have been asking, “where is the future?”, and although most of those are bi-spectacled nerds (who we wholeheartedly support), many others are starting to wonder where we went wrong. I mean, where are the flying cars, the stainless steel towers in the sky, the motorized walkways? Apple is starting to take us into the right direction for technophiles and now musicians have the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona to thank for the Reactable, a multi-user electronic music instrument built into a tabletop interface. Imagine if you will, a life-size Elektroplankton! Yeahhhhh. With it, users are able to create complex and dynamic sonic “topologies” (music compositions) by moving physical objects over the table, controlling virtual generators, filters and modulators in a graspable flow-controlled programming language.

Enough techno-bibble babble, take a look at the Reactable in action after the jump..

Create your own personal mobile phone jammer (at your own risk)

RF Jammer

So you want to piss off your friends or shut up the loud yapper next to you on the subway? Well, get your Radio Shack catalog out of the bathroom and your soldering iron warmed up and ready to go. The wonderfully hacky Ladyada has put together a detailed process for creating the Wave Bubble and published it under a Creative Commons license. What is the Wave Bubble you ask? It’s a self-tuning, wide bandwidth portable RF jammer (cell, WIFI, Bluetooth, etc) that fits snugly in your pocket (though I’d recommend you not keep it in there too long). Using an internal lithium-ion battery, you can jam dual band frequencies (like mobile phones) for up to 2 hours within a 20 foot radius, then recharge via a mini-USB connector. If you’re actually skilled enough to take on such a highly technical project, you should still be aware that this technically is against FCC regulations (therefor don’t even think of selling pre-made jammers). Did I mention that you shouldn’t even think of building this?

Semacode for “hello, world!” cut into crops for Google Earth

Semacode

“Googlespotting” or, sight-seeing via Google Earth in order to discover unique little images throughout the world via Google’s satellite maps, is a growing hobby among map surfers. With companies already taking advantage of Google Earth for marketing purposes (just look for the large Wal-Mart, Target, and Home Depot logos painted on the roofs of some of the newer stores), artists are beginning to find unique and interesting ways of using the system for spreading their message, or creations. Such is the case in the area of Thuringia, a small rural area in central Germany where artists recently cut a Semacode which when decoded translates to “Hello, world!”.

Miniature snow machine let’s you make your own snow at home

Snow at Home

Though I wouldn’t recommend recreating a snow-capped mountain on top of your couch, this miniature snow machine will let you turn your backyard into a mini alp as long as the temperature is around 0 c to -3 c (27 – 30 degrees f). Specifically for personal, hotel or event usage, this mini snow machine lets you create nice, dry flakes of snow using cool water, perfect for your kid’s birthday party or to add a little spice to your party.

Segway Polo – Polo meets the future

Segway Polo

Fusing a 2000 year old game usually played on horseback with a new generation of high-tech, magnetically balanced transportation, fans of polo are modernizing the sport by replacing their 4-legged pals with cold-hearted technology in the form of a Segway. The Segway polo scene started in the Bay Area (of course), with leagues popping up all around the world, most notably in New Zealand, the UAE and China. International matches appear to be held several times a year, but no news of sponsorship deals have yet to appear.

Video of the MIT Assist Sketch Understanding System

Smartboard

The future of office interaction is coming my friends and I for one am welcoming my whiteboard masters with open arms. The brainy folks at MIT have developed an amazing system (Assist Sketch Understanding System) which recognizes drawings on a smart board allowing users to create dynamic sketches with varying degrees of interactivity and intelligence. One of the examples shown involves the presenter sketching a small car on an inclined plane. After sketching this on the whiteboard, he presses the run button and the drawing is instantly animated and even reacts accordingly to the presenter NOT having drawn axles for the wheels! I can see this being used in many industries, especially by game designers and animators in order to mock up level design or character prototypes! I have no information on whether this technology will be available anytime soon or ever at all, but we can all hope to have one day have one of these boards in our meeting rooms.

Shhh – the Society for HandHeld Hushing

Shhh!

The brilliant designers over at Coudal Partners are involved in the creation of Shhh, the Society for HandHeld Hushing, a small society providing mannered individuals the tools needed to approach people having obnoxious and personal mobile phone conversations in public, informing them of the disturbance their discussion about their husband’s penis enlargement surgery is causing around them. Shhh provides a 3 page, downloadable kit of stylishly designed cards, which can then be filled out on the spot and dropped casually to the offending mobile yapper. Now we just need some translated versions, starting with German, so I could use these on my morning subway commute to and from the office.

Segways are now banned on the streets and sidewalks of Britain

Segway personal scooter

The Segway personal transporter is sadly now banned on both the streets and sidewalks of “Great” Britain. In what could only be called inspired, the British Department of Transport has invoked the Highway Act of 1835 (yes, 1835) in order to keep Segways off of the streets and limited to private property, basically turning one of the most forward-looking inventions of the 21st century (so far) into nothing more than a useless buggy to check your post box with. The stupidity goes a bit deeper, with a statement from one of the Segway developers, who states that of the 4 officials who actually tested the Segway, 3 of them refused to even ride it, with the 1 who did, only traveling 100 yards.

Quoting Segway owner and an executive of aerospace company EADS:

“How can Tony Blair trumpet Britain’s environmental commitments when the Government tries to stop people using such a clean and sustainable mode of transport? I’m going to carry on using it.”
