Web operating systems unfortunately haven’t caught on yet, but their time is coming, just you wait and see. With connection speeds and performance going up and the complexities many face with organizing their data across multiple workstations and mobile devices, the need for an easy to use and centralized OS is becoming more and more apparent. Desktoptwo is one of a few high quality web operating systems which provide some pretty intense features for the round sum of $0 (my favorite price). Along with 1GB of storage space which you can publicly share with others (file sharing, helloooo), you also have an integrated mail client and address book, web-based IM, office and collaborative apps and a public URL for which to host your personal Desktoptwo blog.

Founded in January of 2006, Squirl is a new social networking service (go Ruby on Rails!!) for collectors, allowing them to organize and share their collections via photos and descriptions while virtually jumping up and down, waving their hands rapidly. Users are able to create their own personalized site via Squirl, using over 30 customized templates, which also comes with action-packed features such as messaging, commenting, RSS feeds and privacy measures to insure you won’t tempt another user into dropping by and making off with your collection of Victorian fine-toothed beard combs.

Several weeks ago, crowdsourcing social web applications networker vikings from Cambrian House launched a pretty impressive guerilla promotional campaign, to deliver 1000 hot pizzas to the California GooglePlex. Unannounced and as a show of thanks to Google, naturally, of course. What they thought would have been the hardest part, was actually the easiest, which was getting past security and into the Google parking lot, where for almost 2 hours the vikings hung out and had pizza with quite a few happy and hungry Google employees. What the vikings didn’t count on, were the Google Chefs (chefs.google.com?). Seems the chefs were a bit upset that the Google workers were so busy eating pizza, that noone was paying any attention to their world-class gourmet meals, which Google provides free of charge to their employees. The chefs get their revenge, though rather anti-climactically….

New web-application Emotionr wants to know how you and the rest of the world are feeling. Have you had a bad day, well, now you can let the world know about it AND effect the world’s overall happiness level at the same time! Consider Emotionr your personal emotion log, you sign-in to the site, set your happiness level, enter a one word answer about your current feeling and another one word as to what makes you feels this way, then submit. You are also free to keep track of your friend’s moods and their friends and so on, social-networking style.

Snacksby is an interesting addition to the new breed of web applications. Basically a recipe site, with a twist, Snacksby asks that you enter in what you have in your pantry or cupboard and it returns to you a list of recipes containing those ingredients. For instance, if I had sharp cheddar (soy) cheese, multigrain bread, onions, pepper, dijon mustard, and butter (margarine), Snacksby informs me that I have all of the ingredients to cook a quick and easy “Grilled Cheese sandwich, Alton Brown style-ish” as well as a partial list of ingredients for over 9 more pages of recipes. Kudos Snacksby, you just made a lazy household’s cooking even easier!

Newshutch is a new player in the web-based RSS feed reading services arena, but they immediately stand-out for their extremely simple and user-friendly layout and functionality. The usability of the site is a refreshing experience (after using Bloglines), with navigation flow being extremely smooth thanks to the fading between menus and pages when entering new feeds or reading updated feeds. Although they’re having some growing pains due to recent press, they are beefing up their infrastructure and rolling out new database servers to handle the new users. Highly recommended, would use again!1!11!!!
