According to the Great Firewall of China web app, Bunch of Nerds is one of the many many many many sites blocked in China. Which is really depressing, cause, I really like China! Naturally I’m not so hot on the human rights abuse, the perverted form of commutalistism, the mad amount of industrial expansion and the pollution which follows it, but, still, I’ve never done wrong by you China, why does it have to go down like this?

Is your site or blog blocked by the Great Firewall of China?

Russian fisherman catch “alien fish”, it squeaks, they eat it
March 9th - 25 Responses

alienfish.jpg

I soooo want to believe, but I just can’t. Pravda, which is not one of the most respectable of news agencies, is reporting an amazing tale of two fisherman in the Rostov region of Russia who caught a “fish” with a startling resemblance to an alien. The “fish”, which actually looks like a giant jello mold, was producing rather strange squeaky sounds before it died, at which point the fisherman decided to film it with an even creepier soundtrack behind it, of what appears to be a song about a howling, dying animal recorded on a soviet-era boombox. Not scared of the fact they caught a “fish” which resembled an alien-shark, the men proceeded to cook and eat it, claiming it was the most delicious fish they ever ate.

Internet comments are reporting that the fish is in fact a ’skate’, a sister species of rays and sharks.

FlexibleLove is a brand of experimental furniture, which incorporates accordian-like structures to create highly durable and flexible furniture pieces made of low-cost recycled material. The name is a bit odd, but, when one knows it’s derived from “flexible love seat”, it starts to make a little more sense.

London man remodels apartment to mimic that of the Starship Voyager
March 7th - 3 Responses

Yes! I love a Star Trek nerd with commitment. And it takes a hell of a lot of commitment to turn your studio apartment into a living replica of the interior of a starship. Completely functional, the gentleman’s home, right outside of London, has been completely handcrafted with everyday parts from the local Home Depot. The design features working LED lighting systems, is air conditioned and even has a replica transporter control system which triggers sound systems and lights via fader input. The downside other than retina damage was bankruptcy, which the owner recently emerged from.

Coffee is a drug, you dig?

Sweet brown nectar, why must your mere existence always confuse me? Researchers at the University of Bristol are now saying that regular caffeine intake does not make one more alert, rather it simply returns one back to normal from the withdrawal symptoms experienced in between. Regular morning coffee drinkers appear to experience a minor addiction, which results in overnight withdrawal, leading the sufferer to mistake the stimulating feeling after their next cup as an actual boosting effect of the coffee. Bollacks I say. Give me my morning cup of coffee and stay out of my way, man.

Ever wanted to blast a cap in Gozer and change your last name to Venkman? Now you can, kind of. A large group of fans and crafter hackers have put a lot of time and effort into the recreation of various props from the Ghostbusters storyline, including their most popular tutorial, “Learn how to build a proton pack”. Not sure if you’ll be able to zap your neighbors or lock them away in your ghost trap, but it’s worth a shot and can always come in handy for Halloween.

Man, I have to apologize already for the title up there, but it was so bad I just had to do it. Soooo yeah, stare at the photo closely. What is it you ask? 2.21 heads of lettuce? Nonononono my friends. What you’re seeing up there is the Iceburg Lettuce safe, sure to be a hot “as seen on TV” seller if I’ve ever seen one! It looks absolutely realistic at distance, is made to be kept in your fridge and features a spacious hidden compartment underneath where you can store your (non-perishable) valuables while you’re on holiday or just in need of a witty place to hide that engagement ring you want to give to your ladyfriend.

Statistics and everyday objects as art
March 2nd - 7 Responses

cans.jpg

Artist Chris Jordan has recently unveiled his brilliant art series “Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait”, where he takes a look at American culture via consumption statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of some object, such as 15,000,000 sheets of office paper (which is actually 5 minutes of America’s paper usage) and 106,000 aluminum cans (30 seconds of canned drinks consumption). The images are striking, putting statistical data on overconsumption in an easily identifiable and visual context. Jordan’s caveat however, is that viewers attempt to see them in person, where their scale is better experienced than through JPEGs displayed on a screen.
